Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Accord have?

The Accord’s transmission depends on three things: the model year, the engine and whether the car is a hybrid. Automatic four-cylinder cars went from a three-speed Hondamatic to a four-speed automatic in 1983, a five-speed in 2003 and a CVT in 2013. Since 2018 the 1.5L turbo has kept the CVT, while the 2.0L turbo has a ten-speed automatic. V6 cars, sold from 1995 to 2017, went from a four-speed to a five-speed and finally a six-speed automatic.

Four-cylinder and V6 Accords do not share a transmission, even when both are called a five-speed automatic. On the manual side, four-cylinder cars had a five-speed from 1980 to 2012 and a six-speed from 2013 until the manual was dropped after 2020. The table below shows what was fitted in each generation.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Hondamatic or four-speed automatic — 1980–1985

Automatic Accords from 1980 to 1982 have a three-speed Hondamatic; the four-speed automatic took over for 1983. Tell us the exact model year so the right unit is quoted.

Four-cylinder or V6

Every Accord before 1995 is a four-cylinder. From 1995 to 2017, when a V6 was offered, the two engines have different transmissions. A unit from a V6 Accord will not fit a four-cylinder car, or the other way round.

CVT or geared automatic

From 2013, automatic Accords with the 2.4L or the 1.5L turbo use a CVT, while the V6 has a six-speed automatic and the 2.0L turbo a ten-speed. A CVT and a geared automatic are not interchangeable.

Hybrids

Accord Hybrids from 2014 on have no conventional transmission; a two-motor hybrid system takes its place. The 2005–2007 Accord Hybrid has a five-speed automatic built to fit its electric motor, which is not the unit from the standard V6.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Accord transmission problems

Four-speed automatic failure — 1998–2002

The four-speed automatic in this generation is known for wearing out early, and it is the best-known Accord transmission fault. It starts to slip or shift roughly, often with a flashing D4 light, until it has to be replaced.

V6 five-speed — 2003–2004

Heat can build up at the second gears and chip or break their teeth, which in the worst case locks up the transmission. Honda recalled these cars in 2004 to improve lubrication to second gear.

Four-cylinder five-speed — 2005–2010

A shaft bearing inside the transmission can break up, which can stall the engine or let the car roll after it is put in Park. Honda recalled these cars in 2011, and the fix was a software update.

CVT judder and belt slip — 2013–2016

Some 2013 cars surge, hesitate or judder when pulling away from a stop, and on 2015–2016 cars the CVT belt can slip at highway speed, felt as a sudden rise in revs. Honda released updates through its dealers for both.

Torque converter judder — 2013–2017

A judder from the torque converter lock-up clutch can be felt while driving between 20 and 60 mph. Honda issued a service bulletin on it for these model years.

FAQ

Accord transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Accord have?

It depends on the model year, the engine and whether the car is a hybrid. Automatic cars have a three-speed Hondamatic from 1980 to 1982, a four-speed automatic from 1983 to 2002 and a five-speed automatic from 2003 to 2012. From 2013 the 2.4L and 1.5L turbo use a CVT, the V6 a six-speed automatic and, from 2018, the 2.0L turbo a ten-speed. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Can I use a V6 transmission in a four-cylinder Accord?

No. In every generation that offered a V6, from 1995 to 2017, four-cylinder and V6 Accords use different transmissions, and they do not interchange.

The D4 light on my 1990s Accord is flashing. Is the transmission finished?

Not necessarily. A flashing D4 light means the transmission control unit has stored a fault code, and a failed speed sensor or shift solenoid — both replaceable on their own — is a common cause. Have the code read before paying for a transmission.

My Accord has an open transmission recall. What should I do?

Have the recall work done first — it is free at a Honda dealer. The 2004 recall on V6 cars improved lubrication to second gear and replaced the transmission only where damage was found, and the 2011 recall on four-cylinder cars was a software update.

Does the Accord Hybrid have a regular transmission?

The 2005–2007 Accord Hybrid does: a five-speed automatic built to fit its electric motor. Hybrids from 2014 on use a two-motor hybrid system in place of a transmission. Send us your VIN and we will tell you what we can source.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
