Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Civic have?

Automatic Civics have gone from the semi-automatic Hondamatic of 1980 through three-, four- and five-speed automatics to, since 2014, a CVT. Every Si since 1988 and every Type R has been manual only, and the hybrid CVTs and drive units are not shared with other Civics.

Within those groups the versions differ by year and engine, so a transmission has to be matched to the car, not just to the name. Each Civic generation, and what it came with, is listed below.

Five-speed manualDX and higher trims.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Automatic, CVT or manual

Leaving the hybrids aside, the automatic Civic has been a CVT since 2014, apart from the Civic Natural Gas, which kept a five-speed automatic to 2015. 2006–2013 cars have a five-speed automatic, and 1986–2005 cars a four-speed, except the HX coupe and the 2001–2005 GX, which use a CVT. Earlier cars have a three-speed or a Hondamatic. None of these types interchanges with another.

Si and Type R are manual only

Since 1988 the Si has come only with a manual: a five-speed through 2005 and a six-speed from 2006. The Type R has a six-speed. From 1999 on, the Si’s gearbox and the Type R’s are not the same as a manual in a regular Civic.

Four-wheel-drive wagons

The 1985–1991 4WD wagons use transmissions of their own, with an output that drives the rear wheels, and their manual has an extra Super Low gear. A unit from a front-drive Civic is not a substitute.

Have your VIN ready

Generation, trim, engine and body style all decide which unit a Civic takes. Your VIN settles all four, so we quote the transmission that bolts in.

Common Problems

Common Civic transmission problems

Worn synchros — high-mileage manuals

As a manual Civic piles on miles, its synchronizers wear and the gearbox crunches on quick shifts, usually into second or third. Fresh fluid will not cure worn synchros; the gearbox needs a rebuild or replacing.

Four-speed automatic failure — 2001–2005

The 2001–2005 four-speed automatic is prone to slipping, flaring between gears and then failing outright. Once it slips or loses drive, a fluid change will not save it; the unit needs rebuilding or replacing.

CVT drive-shaft recall — 2014–2015

The control software could put too much pressure on the drive pulley shaft, which could break and lock the front wheels. Honda recalled these cars in 2015 with a software update; check by VIN that it was done.

FAQ

Civic transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Civic have?

Broadly: a Hondamatic or a three-speed automatic, or a four- or five-speed manual, on 1980–1985 cars; a four-speed automatic or a manual from 1986 to 2005, with a CVT in the HX and the 2001–2005 GX; a five-speed automatic or manual from 2006 to 2013; and from 2014 a CVT, with a five-speed manual through 2015 and a six-speed manual on some later trims. The Si from 1988 on and the Type R are manual only, and hybrids have their own units. Your VIN pins down which one your car has.

My 1990s automatic Civic is blinking its D4 light. Do I need a new transmission?

Not necessarily. On the 1992–2000 four-speed automatic, a blinking D4 light means the transmission computer has logged a fault, and a failed shift or lock-up solenoid is a frequent cause. Get the stored code read first.

Can I replace the CVT with a conventional automatic?

No. A CVT Civic’s engine computer and wiring are set up for that transmission, so the replacement has to be a CVT of the same version.

What fluid goes in a Civic CVT?

Honda CVT fluid. Ordinary automatic transmission fluid is not a substitute, so make sure the replacement unit is filled with the right one when it goes in.

Which transmission does the Civic Hybrid use?

The 2003–2015 hybrids use a CVT of their own, and some 2003–2005 cars have a five-speed manual. The 2025-on Civic Hybrid has a two-motor drive with no conventional gearbox. Give us the VIN of any Civic Hybrid and we’ll identify the unit it needs.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
