Which transmission does your CR-V have?

The CR-V moved from a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual to a five-speed automatic for 2005, dropped the manual after 2006, and has used a CVT on every gas model since 2015. The CR-V Hybrid, from 2020, has a two-motor e-CVT with no conventional gearset at all.

The table below shows what was fitted when. The CVT is matched to the engine — the 2.4L and the 1.5L turbo use different final drives — and the hybrid drive unit is a different thing again, so we confirm from your VIN.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

The hybrid e-CVT is not a CVT

The CR-V Hybrid’s “e-CVT” has no belt and no gearset: the engine drives a generator, two motors drive the wheels, and a clutch gives direct drive at highway speed. It is a different unit from the gas CR-V’s CVT, and the 2023-on unit differs from the 2020–2022 one.

CVT: 2.4L or 1.5L turbo

The 2017–2019 LX with the 2.4L and the turbo models use the CVT with different final-drive ratios. Match the engine, not just the model year.

Four-speed or five-speed, 2002–2006

The second-generation CR-V changed from a four-speed to a five-speed automatic for 2005. They are different units, so tell us the model year.

Programming after fitting

The CVT is controlled by the powertrain control module, and Honda’s belt-slip and vibration fixes are software updates. A replacement needs programming and its learning values reset.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common CR-V transmission problems

Vibration — 2015 CVT

Vibration while stopped in gear, pulling away at 1,000–1,200 rpm or cruising at 40–50 mph. Honda bulletin 15-046 (first issued August 2015, revised through 2018) fixes it with software and idle changes, engine and transmission mounts and radiator bushings. The 2016 was revised, though some owners still complained.

CVT belt slip — 2015–2016

An incorrect learning value in the powertrain control module causes a pressure problem; the belt slips and the rpm surges at highway speed, with code P1890. Honda bulletins 16-053 and 16-057 are software updates. There is no CR-V CVT warranty extension — the 7-year extension was for the Civic and Accord.

Stalling — 2017–2023

A CR-V that stalls is more likely to have the fuel-pump recall 23V858 than a transmission fault; NHTSA lists no CVT recall for the 2017 or 2023 CR-V. Have open recalls done before suspecting the CVT.

FAQ

CR-V transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my CR-V have?

A four-speed automatic or five-speed manual to 2004, a five-speed automatic from 2005 to 2014 (with the manual to 2006), a CVT on every gas CR-V from 2015, and a two-motor e-CVT on the Hybrid from 2020. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Do you supply the CR-V Hybrid’s e-CVT?

The Hybrid’s drive unit has no belt or gearset — it is two motors, a generator and a clutch, and the 2023-on unit differs from the 2020–2022 one. Call us with your VIN and we will tell you what we can source.

My 2015–2016 CR-V surges on the highway. Is the CVT failing?

Not necessarily. Honda bulletins 16-053 and 16-057 trace the surge to a control-module learning value that lets the belt slip, and the fix is a software update. Have that done first and the unit checked afterwards.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
