Engine Options
Which engine does your CR-V have?
The CR-V has had four engine families: the 2.0L B20 of 1997–2001, the 2.4L K24 in several versions from 2002 to 2019, the 1.5L turbocharged L15BE since 2017, and 2.0L Atkinson-cycle engines in the CR-V Hybrid since 2020. Every K24 has a timing chain.
The table below shows which engine was fitted when. From 2017 the trim decides between the 2.4L and the turbo, and hybrids have engines of their own, so we confirm from your VIN.
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L four-cylinder | Code: B20B4 | 1997–1998. |
| 2.0L four-cylinder | Code: B20Z2 | 1999–2001. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4L i-VTEC four-cylinder | Code: K24A1 | All trims. |

| 2.4L i-VTEC four-cylinder | Code: K24Z6 | 2010–2011. Higher compression; oil spec changed to 0W-20. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4L four-cylinder, port injection | 2012–2014. Commonly listed as the K24Z7. | |
| 2.4L Earth Dreams four-cylinder, direct injection | Code: K24W9 | 2015–2016, with the CVT. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4L four-cylinder, direct injection | LX only, 2017–2019, carried over from the 2015–2016 engine. Dropped for 2020. | |
| 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder | Code: L15BE | EX, EX-L and Touring 2017–2019; every gas trim 2020–2022. Variable cam timing without VTEC. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
2.4L or 1.5L turbo, 2017–2019
LX models kept the 2.4L while EX and above have the 1.5L turbo. From 2020 every gas CR-V is a turbo. They are different engine families, so tell us the trim.
Which 2.4L
Five versions of the K24 were used between 2002 and 2019, and the 2015-on engine is direct-injected where the earlier ones are port-injected. Match the code stamped on the block, not just the size.
Two versions of the 1.5L turbo
The 2017–2022 L15BE has variable cam timing only; the 2023-on engine adds VTEC. Same code, different engines, so the model year matters.
Hybrid or gas
The CR-V Hybrid (2020 on) uses a 2.0L Atkinson-cycle engine with two electric motors, and the engine changed again for 2023. It does not interchange with the gas engines.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the engine code, model year and trim before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common CR-V engine problems
Oil dilution — 1.5L turbo, 2017–2018
In short trips and cold weather, unburned fuel passes the rings and raises the oil level, bringing power loss and a check-engine light. Honda’s product updates 18-114 and 18-124 (late 2018) are software changes, and in April 2019 Honda extended cover on camshafts and rocker-arm assemblies to 6 years with unlimited miles for 2017–2018 CR-Vs. It is an operating problem, not a failed engine.
Head-gasket failure — 1.5L turbo and hybrid, 2017 on
Overheating, coolant loss and misfires with codes P0300–P0304 from a leaking head gasket. In August 2026 Honda extended cover to 10 years or 150,000 miles for 2017–2026 1.5L turbo CR-Vs (bulletins 26-016, 26-017 and 26-098, the last for 2017 and running only to May 31, 2027) and 2020–2026 Hybrids (26-018 and 26-019). The repair replaces the gasket, and the head or short block if warped; owners are due to be notified around October 2026, so check with a dealer before paying for an engine.
Vibration — 2015
A vibration while stopped in gear, pulling away or cruising at 40–50 mph on the 2015 2.4L with the CVT. Honda bulletin 15-046 (revised several times to 2018) covers software and idle changes, engine and transmission mounts and radiator bushings. It is a calibration and mount issue, not an engine failure.
Engine recalls — 2015–2016
Recall 15V121000: connecting-rod bolts on some 2015 CR-Vs were not torqued, risking power loss or an oil leak. Recall 17V305000: replacement engines fitted to some 2015–2016 CR-Vs may have the wrong pistons, causing power loss or stalling. If your CR-V has already had an engine replaced, check that recall by VIN.

FAQ
CR-V engine questions, answered
Which engine does my CR-V have?
A 2.0L B20 to 2001, a 2.4L K24 from 2002 to 2019 (LX only from 2017), the 1.5L turbo from 2017 and a 2.0L hybrid engine from 2020. The code is stamped on the block, and we can confirm it from your VIN.
Does the 1.5L turbo oil-dilution problem mean I need a new engine?
Usually not. On 2017–2018 CR-Vs Honda addressed it with software updates and a warranty extension on the camshafts and rocker arms; it is a short-trip and cold-weather problem rather than a failed engine. Have a dealer apply the updates first.
My CR-V stalls. Do I need a new engine?
Not necessarily. 2017–2023 CR-Vs were recalled (23V858) for a fuel pump that can fail and stall the engine, and some 2015–2016 replacement engines were recalled for incorrect pistons. Check for open recalls by VIN before paying for an engine.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
