Engine Options

Which engine does your Odyssey have?

The first-generation Odyssey, sold in the US from 1995 to 1998, had a four-cylinder engine: the 2.2L F22B6 for 1995–1997 and the 2.3L F23A7 for 1998. Every Odyssey since 1999 has had Honda’s 3.5L SOHC VTEC J35 V6. Six versions of the V6 have been used — J35A1, J35A4, J35A6, J35A7, J35Z8 and the direct-injection J35Y6 — and from 2005 some of them have Variable Cylinder Management (VCM), which shuts off cylinders when cruising.

All of these engines, four-cylinder and V6 alike, drive their camshafts with a timing belt. For 2005–2010 the trim decides whether the van has VCM, so one model year can have two different V6s; the table below sets out which engine went where, and your VIN settles it.

1995–1998First generation
2.2L four-cylinderCode: F22B61995–1997, all trims.
2.3L four-cylinderCode: F23A71998, all trims.
1999–2004Second generation (RL1)
3.5L V6Code: J35A11999–2001, all trims. No VCM.
3.5L V6Code: J35A42002–2004, all trims. No VCM. Same code as the 2003–2004 Pilot.
2005–2010Third generation (RL3/RL4)
3.5L V6 without VCMCode: J35A6LX and EX. Same code as the 2005 Pilot.
3.5L V6 with VCMCode: J35A7EX-L and Touring. VCM runs on three or six cylinders for 2005–2007, and on three, four or six for 2008–2010.
2011–2017Fourth generation (RL5)
3.5L V6 with VCMCode: J35Z8All trims. VCM runs on three, four or six cylinders.
2018–presentFifth generation (RL6)
3.5L V6, direct injection, with VCMCode: J35Y6All trims. VCM runs on three or six cylinders. Shared with the 2016–2022 Pilot, the Ridgeline from 2017 and the 2019–2025 Passport.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

2.2L or 2.3L, 1995–1998

A 1995–1997 van takes the 2.2L F22B6 and a 1998 van the 2.3L F23A7. The two are not the same engine, and neither belongs in a 1999-or-later Odyssey. The Isuzu Oasis is a Honda-built twin of this van and uses the same four-cylinders.

With or without VCM, 2005–2010

On these vans the trim decides the engine: LX and EX have the J35A6 without Variable Cylinder Management, while EX-L and Touring have the J35A7 with it. Both are 3.5L, so go by the stamped code or the trim rather than the size.

J35A7, 2005–2007 or 2008–2010

The J35A7 kept its code when Honda updated it for 2008, but its VCM gained a four-cylinder mode that the 2005–2007 version does not have. Give us the model year as well as the trim.

Reading the code on the block

Honda stamps the engine code — J35A7, J35Z8 and so on — into the block itself. A clear photo of the stamping helps, and the VIN identifies the engine when the stamping is hard to reach.

Pilot, Ridgeline and Passport donors

The J35A4 also went into the 2003–2004 Pilot, the J35A6 into the 2005 Pilot, and the J35Y6 into the 2016–2022 Pilot, the 2017-on Ridgeline and the 2019–2025 Passport. Matching codes narrow the search; we still check the donor’s model year against your van.

Have your VIN ready

An Odyssey VIN tells us the model year and trim, and with them the exact engine version, so the quote is for the right unit the first time.

Common Problems

Common Odyssey engine problems

Oil burning and misfires — VCM engines, 2008–2017

When Variable Cylinder Management shuts cylinders off, the piston rings in those cylinders can clog with carbon and stick. The engine then burns oil, fouls the spark plugs in the cylinders that shut off and misfires. For 2008–2010 only EX-L and Touring vans have VCM; from 2011 every trim does.

Connecting-rod bearing failure — 2018–2019

A manufacturing error can let the connecting-rod bearings wear until they seize, which destroys the engine. Honda recalled 2018–2019 vans so that dealers inspect the engine and repair or replace it. Before buying a replacement for one of these vans, ask a Honda dealer to run the VIN and see whether that work was done.

Timing belt failure — every generation

Every Odyssey engine, the 1995–1998 four-cylinders included, has a timing belt rather than a chain, and the V6 is an interference engine, so a broken belt lets the valves strike the pistons. Honda recalled 2019 vans for belt teeth that can separate and stall the engine, and 2002 vans for a misaligned tensioner pulley on the water pump that could wear the belt until it failed. On vans with the Maintenance Minder, a new belt is due when sub-code 4 appears.

FAQ

Odyssey engine questions, answered

Which engine does my Odyssey have?

A 2.2L four-cylinder (F22B6) for 1995–1997 and a 2.3L four-cylinder (F23A7) for 1998. Since 1999 it has always been a 3.5L J35 V6, with the version depending on the year and trim: J35A1 for 1999–2001, J35A4 for 2002–2004, J35A6 (LX, EX) or J35A7 (EX-L, Touring) for 2005–2010, J35Z8 for 2011–2017 and J35Y6 from 2018. Look for the code stamped on the block, or send us the VIN and we will look it up.

Will a Pilot engine fit my Odyssey?

Only where the codes match. The 2003–2004 Pilot shares the J35A4 with the 2002–2004 Odyssey, the 2005 Pilot shares the J35A6 with the 2005–2010 Odyssey LX and EX, and the 2016–2022 Pilot shares the J35Y6 with the 2018-on Odyssey. Every other Pilot year has a different version, and no Pilot engine suits a 1995–1998 four-cylinder van. Give us your VIN and the Pilot’s model year and we will check the pairing.

My Odyssey stalls. Do I need a new engine?

Not necessarily. Honda has recalled certain 2013–2023 vans for an in-tank fuel pump that can fail and stall the engine, and 2019 vans for a timing belt that can shed teeth. Both are recall repairs, so have a Honda dealer run the VIN before you replace the engine.

Is the engine covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
