Engine Options
Which engine does your Pilot have?
Every Pilot has had a 3.5L J35 V6 with a timing belt, but the version has changed with almost every generation and sometimes within one: SOHC VTEC engines with and without Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) through 2015, the direct-injection J35Y6 for 2016–2022, and since 2023 a DOHC J35Y8 that has variable cam timing but not VTEC.
The table below shows which engine was fitted when. For 2006–2008 the drive type decides the engine — two-wheel-drive Pilots had VCM and four-wheel-drive ones did not — so we confirm from your VIN.
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5L V6 | Code: J35A4 | 2003–2004, all trims. No VCM. Same code as the 2002–2004 Odyssey. |
| 3.5L V6 | Code: J35A6 | 2005, all trims. Drive-by-wire, no VCM. |
| 3.5L V6 with VCM | Code: J35Z1 | 2006–2008, two-wheel drive. First-generation VCM (three or six cylinders). |
| 3.5L V6 without VCM | Code: J35A9 | 2006–2008, four-wheel drive. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5L V6 with VCM | Code: J35Z4 | All trims. Second-generation VCM (three, four or six cylinders). |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5L V6, direct injection, with VCM | Code: J35Y6 | All trims. Third-generation VCM; idle-stop on nine-speed trims. Shared with the 2018-on Odyssey. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5L DOHC V6, direct injection, with VCM | Code: J35Y8 | All trims. Variable cam timing without VTEC; cams driven by a toothed belt. Also the 2026-on Passport. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
2006–2008: drive type decides the engine
Two-wheel-drive Pilots of these years have the J35Z1 with Variable Cylinder Management; four-wheel-drive ones have the J35A9 without it. They are different engines. Tell us whether your Pilot is 2WD or 4WD.
Find your engine code
Honda stamps the code — J35Z4, J35Y6 and so on — on the engine block. If you can’t find it, we can confirm it from your VIN.
Three different 3.5Ls since 2009
The 2009–2015 J35Z4 is port-injected, the 2016–2022 J35Y6 is direct-injected and the 2023-on J35Y8 has twin-cam heads. Same displacement, three different engines; the model year tells us which.
Shared with other Hondas
The J35A4 is the same code as the 2002–2004 Odyssey, and the J35Y6 was also fitted to the 2018-on Odyssey, the Ridgeline and the 2019–2025 Passport. A shared code is a good start, but we still match by model year.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the engine code, model year and drive type before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Pilot engine problems
Oil consumption and misfires — VCM engines, 2009–2015
Piston-ring wear and sludge let oil foul the spark plugs on cylinders that shut off, causing misfires with codes P0301–P0304. Honda’s 2013 class-action settlement gave 2009–2013 Pilots an 8-year warranty extension on misfire repairs, and in June 2025 bulletin 25-060 extended cover on 2013–2015 Pilots to 10 years or 150,000 miles. Check with a dealer before paying for an engine.
Connecting-rod bearing failure — 2016 and 2018–2019
A grinding error on the crankshaft wears the rod bearing until the engine seizes. Recall 23V751 (November 2023) covers 2016 and 2018–2019 Pilots — not 2017 or 2020 — with an inspection and repair or a replacement engine, and NHTSA has an open investigation into 2016–2020. Confirm the recall was done on any 2016, 2018 or 2019 J35Y6, including a donor engine.
Timing belt — 2018–2019, and every Pilot
Recall 19V298 covers 2018–2019 Pilots for belt teeth that can separate and stall the engine; dealers inspect and replace the belt. Every Pilot engine, including the 2023-on J35Y8, has a belt rather than a chain. Honda’s Maintenance Minder calls for it at sub-code 4, and the dealer guide quotes 105,000 miles or 7 years.
Stalling from engine software — 2023–2025
Recall 25V031 (January 2025): an error in the fuel-injection control software can stall the engine or cut power. The fix is a reflash, not an engine, so check for open recalls before condemning a 2023–2025 engine.

FAQ
Pilot engine questions, answered
Which engine does my Pilot have?
Always a 3.5L V6, but the version depends on year and sometimes drive type: J35A4 for 2003–2004, J35A6 for 2005, J35Z1 (2WD) or J35A9 (4WD) for 2006–2008, J35Z4 for 2009–2015, J35Y6 for 2016–2022 and J35Y8 from 2023. The code is stamped on the block, and we can confirm it from your VIN.
Will an Odyssey engine fit my Pilot?
In some years. The 2002–2004 Odyssey shares the J35A4 with the 2003–2004 Pilot, and the 2018-on Odyssey shares the J35Y6 with the 2016–2022 Pilot. Other years use different versions. Send us your VIN and the donor’s model year and we will confirm.
My 2016–2019 Pilot knocks or has seized. Is that the recall?
Possibly. Recall 23V751 covers 2016 and 2018–2019 Pilots for a connecting-rod bearing that can wear and seize the engine, with an inspection and repair or replacement at a Honda dealer under the recall. A 2017 Pilot is not in the recall, though NHTSA’s open investigation covers 2016–2020. Check by VIN before paying for an engine.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
