Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Odyssey have?

Every US Odyssey has been an automatic, and the gear count has climbed with each generation: a four-speed for 1995–2001, a five-speed from 2002 (kept on the LX, EX and EX-L through 2013), a six-speed on the 2011–2013 Touring and on every trim for 2014–2017, then a ZF nine-speed or Honda’s own ten-speed for 2018–2019 depending on trim. Since 2020 every Odyssey has the ten-speed.

A four-speed from a 1995–1998 four-cylinder van does not fit a 1999–2001 V6 van, and for 2005–2010, 2011–2013 and 2018–2019 the trim decides the transmission as well as the model year. The table below is a guide; we confirm the exact unit from your VIN.

1995–1998First generation
Four-speed automaticAll trims; the only transmission offered. Paired with the 2.2L four-cylinder for 1995–1997 and the 2.3L for 1998.
1999–2004Second generation (RL1)
Four-speed automaticCode: B7XA1999–2001, all trims.
Five-speed automaticCode: BYBA2002–2004, all trims. Revised for 2004.
2005–2010Third generation (RL3/RL4)
Five-speed automaticAll trims. EX-L and Touring vans use a version with different fourth- and fifth-gear ratios from the LX and EX. Redesigned for 2007.
2011–2017Fourth generation (RL5)
Five-speed automaticLX, EX and EX-L, 2011–2013.
Six-speed automaticTouring and Touring Elite 2011–2013; every trim 2014–2017.
2018–presentFifth generation (RL6)

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Nine-speed or ten-speed, 2018–2019

In these two model years the trim decides it: LX, EX and EX-L vans have the ZF nine-speed, Touring and Elite vans Honda’s ten-speed. One is a ZF design and the other Honda’s own, so they do not interchange. Every 2020-and-later Odyssey has the ten-speed.

Five-speed or six-speed, 2011–2013

LX, EX and EX-L vans from these years have a five-speed; Touring and Touring Elite vans have a six-speed. For 2014 the six-speed became standard on every trim.

Which five-speed

Odysseys used five-speed automatics from 2002 to 2013, and they are not one unit: the transmission was revised for 2004 and redesigned for 2007, and 2005–2010 EX-L and Touring vans have different fourth- and fifth-gear ratios from the LX and EX. We match by model year and trim, not by gear count.

Which four-speed, 1995–2001

The 1995–1998 four-cylinder vans and the 1999–2001 V6 vans both have four-speed automatics, but they were built for different engines and do not interchange. For a first-generation van we also match the model year, because the engine grew from 2.2L to 2.3L for 1998.

Have your VIN ready

On most Odysseys the model year and trim decide the transmission, and your VIN tells us both. Send it with your quote request so we can match the unit before we quote.

Common Problems

Common Odyssey transmission problems

Four-speed failure — 1999–2001

The B7XA four-speed behind the first Odyssey V6 has a poor durability record. A bearing inside can break apart and clog the fluid passages, after which the transmission slips, shifts erratically and finally loses drive. A flashing D4 light on the dash means the transmission has logged a fault.

Second gears and third clutch — 2002–2004 five-speed

Under some driving conditions the second gears on the BYBA’s countershaft and secondary shaft run hot, and their teeth can chip or break and lock the transmission. Honda recalled 2002–2004 Odysseys for it: dealers changed the cooler return line to send more fluid to second gear, and on higher-mileage vans checked the gears for heat discoloration first and replaced the transmission if they found it. The recall did not address the unit’s other weakness, early wear of the third-gear clutch pack, which shows as slipping or erratic shifts.

Shifting into Park on its own — 2018–2019

Loose battery terminals or a weak battery can make the transmission control unit reboot, and when it does it can put the transmission into Park and damage the parking rod, so the van may roll when parked. Honda recalled some 2018–2019 Odysseys for it: the dealer secures the battery terminals, updates the control-unit software and checks the parking rod. Confirm by VIN that the work was done before buying a transmission.

FAQ

Odyssey transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Odyssey have?

By model year: a four-speed for 1995–2001 (one unit for the 1995–1998 four-cylinder vans, another for the 1999–2001 V6), a five-speed for 2002–2010, a five- or six-speed for 2011–2013 depending on trim, and a six-speed for 2014–2017. For 2018–2019 the LX, EX and EX-L have a nine-speed and the Touring and Elite a ten-speed, and every Odyssey from 2020 has the ten-speed. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Does my Odyssey have an open transmission recall?

Honda has recalled 2002–2004 Odysseys for second gears that can overheat and break, and some 2018–2019 Odysseys for a transmission control unit that can reboot and shift into Park. Check your VIN on Honda’s or NHTSA’s recall lookup before paying for a transmission; if the recall work is still open, a Honda dealer does it.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
