Finding the right Porsche transmission
Porsche’s sports cars went from the Tiptronic S torque-converter automatic to the PDK dual-clutch in 2009, and the PDK has since been built in several sizes for different engines. The Cayenne and Panamera use conventional Aisin and ZF automatics or a PDK of their own, and manuals have been offered on most of the sports cars throughout.
Which one a Porsche has depends on the model, the engine and the year: a 2008 911 Carrera automatic is a Tiptronic S and a 2009 is a PDK, and the Panamera’s PDK is not the 911’s. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the right one.
Transmission Families
The transmissions behind most Porsche vehicles
Tiptronic S
The five-speed automatic of the 1997–2004 Boxster (986), the 1998–2003 911 Carrera (996) and the 2005–2008 Boxster and Cayman (987) is the ZF 5HP19. The 2005–2008 911 (997.1) also had a five-speed Tiptronic S.
Cayenne and Panamera automatics
The 2003–2010 Cayenne (9PA) has an Aisin TR-60SN six-speed, or a six-speed manual. The 2011–2018 Cayenne (92A) has an Aisin eight-speed, and the 2011–2016 Panamera diesel and hybrid use a conventional eight-speed automatic rather than the PDK. The Cayenne from 2019 (9Y) has a ZF 8HP eight-speed. On the 92A, Porsche extended the transfer-case warranty to 10 years on 2011–2014 cars and 7 years on 2015–2018 cars, with no mileage limit.
PDK 7DT-45
The seven-speed dual-clutch that replaced the Tiptronic in 2009: the 2009–2012 911 (997.2) and Boxster and Cayman (987.2), the 2013–2016 981, the 2012–2019 991 and the 718 from 2017.
PDK 7DT-70, 7DT-75, 8DT-80 and 8DT-55
The heavier PDKs: the 7DT-70 behind the 911 Turbo from 2010, the 7DT-75 in the 2010–2016 Panamera (970), the eight-speed 8DT-80 in the Panamera 971 from 2017 and the eight-speed 8DT-55 in the 992-generation 911 from 2020. The Macan has a seven-speed PDK of its own.
Manuals
The Getrag G96 six-speed in the 996, five- and six-speeds in the 986 and 987 Boxster and Cayman, a six-speed in the 981, the 718 and the GT cars, and the ZF S7-45 seven-speed in the 991 and 992.

FAQ
Used Porsche transmission questions, answered
How do I know which transmission my Porsche has?
It depends on the model, engine and model year. On the sports cars the split is simple — Tiptronic S to 2008, PDK from 2009, or a manual — but the Cayenne and Panamera have had Aisin, ZF and PDK units depending on engine and year. Send us your VIN and we will identify it. On our quote form the 911 is listed as “911930” and the Cayman as “Cayman S”.
Are the PDKs interchangeable?
No. The 7DT-45 behind the Carrera, Boxster and Cayman, the 7DT-70 behind the 911 Turbo, the 7DT-75 and 8DT-80 in the Panamera and the 8DT-55 in the 992 are built for different engines and torque levels, and the Macan’s is different again. Match the unit to the car and the engine, not just to the name PDK.
Is there a Porsche extension or recall on the Cayenne drivetrain?
Two to check before buying. Porsche extended the transfer-case warranty on the 2011–2018 Cayenne (92A) to 10 years on 2011–2014 cars and 7 years on 2015–2018 cars with no mileage limit — that covers the transfer case, not the transmission. Recall 19V446000 replaced a shifter cable bushing on some 2005 and 2008 Cayennes and 2011 Panameras, so have a dealer check the VIN before assuming the transmission is at fault.
Does a used Porsche transmission come with a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
