What are the most common 3.6 Pentastar engine problems? On the 3.6L V6 in Jeeps, Rams, Dodges and Chryslers, the big three are a cracked plastic oil filter housing that leaks oil or coolant, a "Pentastar tick" from worn rocker arms, and, on 2011–2013 engines, left cylinder head wear that causes misfires. Most of these can be repaired. But if a tick has been ignored long enough to damage the camshafts, or the engine has very high miles, a tested used Pentastar often costs less than chasing repairs.

The Pentastar is one of the most widely used V6 engines in America, in everything from the Grand Cherokee to the minivan your neighbor drives. So when one starts ticking or leaking, it's worth knowing what's normal wear and what's a real problem.

Which vehicles have the 3.6 Pentastar V6?

Since 2011, the 3.6L Pentastar has been used in a long list of popular US models, including:

  1. Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wrangler
  2. Jeep Gladiator
  3. Ram 1500
  4. Dodge Durango, Journey, Charger and Challenger
  5. Chrysler 300, Pacifica and Town & Country
  6. Dodge Grand Caravan

That's millions of engines, so even a problem that affects a small share of them shows up a lot.

What causes the Pentastar oil filter housing leak?

The oil filter housing sits in the valley on top of the engine and also contains the oil cooler. On many Pentastars, it's made of plastic. Years of heat cycles can make the plastic warp or crack, and the gaskets harden.

Symptoms include:

  • Oil pooling in the valley between the cylinder heads.
  • An oil or coolant drip at the back of the engine, often blamed on the rear main seal by mistake.
  • A burning oil smell after driving.
  • Coolant loss with no obvious leak, or oil in the coolant in bad cases.

Many owners replace it with an updated or aluminum housing so it doesn't happen again.

What is the Pentastar tick?

The "Pentastar tick" is a ticking sound from the top of the engine that gets faster as the RPM rises. It's usually caused by worn rocker arms, also called roller finger followers, where the small roller bearing wears out.

Catching it early matters. If it's ignored, a damaged rocker can wear the camshaft lobe, turning a fairly simple rocker arm job into a camshaft replacement too.

What was the Pentastar left cylinder head problem?

Some 2011–2013 Pentastars suffered valve seat and valve guide wear on the left cylinder head, causing misfires and a check engine light. Chrysler extended the warranty on the left cylinder head from 5 years or 100,000 miles to 10 years or 150,000 miles for these vehicles:

  1. 2011–2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee
  2. 2011–2013 Dodge Durango
  3. 2011–2013 Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan
  4. 2011–2013 Dodge Avenger and Journey
  5. 2011–2013 Dodge Challenger, Charger and Chrysler 300
  6. 2012–2013 Jeep Wrangler

Coverage ran 10 years from the in-service date, so it has now expired on every vehicle in that group. Chrysler changed the head design in August 2012, and the problem is far less common on later engines.

What are the symptoms of a failing Pentastar engine?

  • Ticking from the top of the engine that rises with RPM.
  • Misfire codes, often P0300 to P0306, especially on one bank.
  • Oil leaks in the valley or at the back of the engine.
  • Oil pressure warnings or code P06DD on some engines, linked to the oil pump.
  • Knocking from the bottom of the engine, which usually means serious internal damage.

How much does it cost to fix a Pentastar or replace the engine?

Go-Parts' guide for the 2014–2018 Jeep Wrangler gives these replacement ranges:

  1. Used OEM engine: about $2,400–4,000
  2. Remanufactured engine: about $4,600–6,300
  3. New OEM crate engine: about $8,000–11,500 or more
  4. Installation labor: about 12–20 hours, or roughly $1,440–4,000

Smaller repairs like an oil filter housing or rocker arms cost much less than an engine, so get a proper diagnosis before deciding.

Where are Pentastar Jeeps, Rams and Dodges most common in the US?

There's no public state-by-state failure data for the Pentastar, so we won't invent any. But these vehicles are especially common in some states, and some driving is harder on the engine.

Big Jeep and Ram states

  1. Michigan
  2. Ohio
  3. Texas
  4. Pennsylvania
  5. Florida
  6. Colorado

Heat, towing and off-road use

  1. Arizona
  2. Nevada
  3. Utah
  4. New Mexico
  5. Oklahoma
  6. Georgia

Heat is hard on plastic parts like the oil filter housing, and towing or off-road crawling at low speed works the engine hard. If your Jeep or Ram lives in a hot state, check the valley for oil each time you change it.

Repair the Pentastar or replace the engine?

Targeted repair

  • What it involves: a new oil filter housing, rocker arms and lifters, or a cylinder head
  • Best when: the engine has reasonable mileage and the problem is caught early
  • Watch out for: a rocker job can grow into a camshaft job if the tick was ignored

Used, rebuilt or remanufactured Pentastar

  • What it involves: replacing the whole engine with a tested unit
  • Best when: camshaft damage, bottom-end knock, low oil pressure or very high mileage
  • Watch out for: matching the exact Pentastar version, since 2016 and newer engines were updated

Auto Part Ocean (www.autopartocean.com) stocks 3.6 Pentastar engines in used, rebuilt and remanufactured condition for Jeep, Ram, Dodge and Chrysler, and we confirm the right engine against your VIN before quoting.

How to handle a Pentastar problem the right way

Step 1: Find the source. Check the valley for oil, listen for where the tick comes from, and read any codes.

Step 2: Fix small problems early. A leaking housing or a ticking rocker is far cheaper caught early.

Step 3: Check for camshaft damage before deciding on a rocker arm repair.

Step 4: Match any replacement to your VIN, including the engine version and model year.

Step 5: Replace the oil filter housing, water pump and thermostat while a replacement engine is out.

Step 6: Change the oil on time and keep every receipt. Many warranties, including ours, ask for proof of professional installation and regular oil changes.

Mistakes Pentastar owners make

The expensive one is ignoring a tick until it becomes a camshaft problem.

Others include replacing the rear main seal when the real leak was the oil filter housing, using a cheap plastic housing that fails again, and buying a used Pentastar without checking which version it is.

Questions to ask before buying a replacement Pentastar

Does this engine match my VIN and model year? Pentastars changed in 2016, and accessories differ by vehicle.

What's the mileage, and was it tested? Ask about compression and oil pressure.

Does it include the oil filter housing and intake? Get the list in writing.

What does the warranty require? Ask about installation and oil change rules.

Frequently asked questions

What are the common 3.6 Pentastar problems? The most common are a leaking or cracked oil filter housing, a ticking noise from worn rocker arms, and on 2011–2013 engines, left cylinder head wear causing misfires.

What causes the Pentastar tick? It's usually worn rocker arms, also called roller finger followers. If ignored, the damaged rocker can wear the camshaft.

Is the Pentastar cylinder head warranty still valid? No. Chrysler's extension covered the left cylinder head for 10 years or 150,000 miles on 2011–2013 vehicles, and that period has now passed for all of them.

How much does a used 3.6 Pentastar engine cost? Used OEM Pentastar engines typically run about $2,400 to $4,000, plus roughly 12 to 20 hours of labor to install.

Is the 3.6 Pentastar a reliable engine? Generally yes, especially 2016 and newer engines, but oil filter housing leaks and rocker arm wear are common, so regular checks and oil changes matter.

The bottom line

The 3.6 Pentastar is a solid engine with a few well-known weak spots. Fix leaks and ticks early and it can run a long time. If the damage has spread to the camshafts or bottom end, a tested replacement engine matched to your VIN is often the smarter money.
