Alfa Romeo Engines
Finding the right Alfa Romeo engine
Alfa Romeo left the US market in 1995 and came back in 2015, and it has sold in small numbers since — Stelvio sales fell to 3,162 in 2024, and the Tonale is being withdrawn after the 2026 model year. There is no large pool of donor cars, so a used Alfa Romeo engine comes from a salvage vehicle, and engines for the 164 Sedan, Spider-2000, Milano and GTV6 are scarcer still.
The modern range is built around two engines — the 2.0L turbo four in the Giulia, Stelvio and Tonale and the 2.9L twin-turbo V6 in the Quadrifoglios — plus the 4C’s 1.75L turbo and the Tonale’s 1.3L plug-in hybrid. The VIN gives the displacement but not the engine code, so give us your VIN and, if you can reach it, the number on the engine plate, and we’ll match the exact one.
Engine Families
The engines behind most Alfa Romeo vehicles
2.9L twin-turbo V6 (690T)
The 505 hp 90-degree V6 of the Giulia Quadrifoglio from 2017 and the Stelvio Quadrifoglio from 2018 — a closed-deck aluminum block with cylinder deactivation, built at Termoli.
2.0L turbo MultiAir (GME-T4)
The 280 hp four-cylinder in every non-Quadrifoglio Giulia from 2017 and Stelvio from 2018, mounted lengthways for rear- or all-wheel drive (Q4). The 2023–2026 Tonale has a transverse 268 hp version shared with the Dodge Hornet GT — the same family but a different build, and not one we would assume fits a Giulia or Stelvio.
1.75L turbo (1750 TBi)
The 237 hp all-aluminum four in the 4C coupe (2015–2018) and 4C Spider (2015–2020), built alongside Maserati at Modena.
1.3L turbo plug-in hybrid
The Tonale plug-in hybrid’s engine, shared with the Dodge Hornet R/T: a 1.3L turbo four with a 15.5 kWh battery and 288 hp combined. Recall 23V623000 covers loose 12 V and high-voltage connectors on these cars — a fire risk, not an engine fault, but worth checking at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Busso 3.0L V6 — 164 Sedan, 1991–1995
The 12-valve SOHC engine (183 hp in the L, 200 hp in the S) and, from 1993, the 24-valve DOHC (210 hp in the LS, 230 hp in the S and Q). It is an interference engine with a timing belt, so a belt failure is the usual reason one is replaced.
2.0L Twin Cam — Spider-2000, 1991–1994
Around 120 hp from the classic twin-cam four, in the last Spiders sold in the US before the brand’s twenty-year absence.

FAQ
Used Alfa Romeo engine questions, answered
How do I find out which engine my Alfa Romeo has?
A VIN decode gives the displacement and cylinder count but leaves the engine code blank, so the engine is identified from the number plate on the block and the build sticker. On the Giulia and Stelvio the question is whether the car is a Quadrifoglio (2.9L V6) or not (2.0L turbo); on the Tonale, whether it is the plug-in hybrid. Send us the VIN and a photo of the engine plate and we will confirm.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
My Giulia or Stelvio stalls or misfires — is that a recall?
It may be. Recall 18V636000 covers a misfire that overheats the catalytic converter on the 2017–2018 Giulia and 2018 Stelvio 2.0L, recall 18V635000 a coolant hose leak on the 2018–2019 Stelvio, and recall 25V586000 a fuel pump failure on the 2017–2019 Giulia and 2018–2019 Stelvio. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you buy an engine, because a recall repair is free. Owners have also reported turbo failures and head-gasket failures to NHTSA outside any recall, and those are the cases where a replacement engine is the fix.
Does a used Alfa Romeo engine come with a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
