Alfa Romeo Transmissions

Finding the right Alfa Romeo transmission

Alfa Romeo has used only a handful of transmissions in the US: ZF eight-speeds in the Giulia and Stelvio, a dry dual-clutch in the 4C, a ZF nine-speed and a six-speed automatic in the Tonale, and manuals and a ZF four-speed automatic in the 1990s 164 Sedan and Spider-2000. None of the cars sold here since 2015 has had a manual gearbox.

Because the brand was absent from the US from 1995 to 2015 and sells in small numbers, used units come from salvage cars. Which unit a car has follows its engine — the 2.0L and the Quadrifoglio V6 use different eight-speeds — so give us your VIN and we’ll match the right one.

Transmission Families

The transmissions behind most Alfa Romeo vehicles

ZF 8HP50 eight-speed

The automatic behind the 2.0L turbo in every Giulia from 2017 and Stelvio from 2018, rear- or all-wheel drive.

ZF 8HP75 eight-speed

The heavier-duty eight-speed behind the 2.9L twin-turbo V6 in the Giulia Quadrifoglio and Stelvio Quadrifoglio. No manual was offered in the US.

4C six-speed dual-clutch (TCT)

The dry dual-clutch in the 4C coupe (2015–2018) and 4C Spider (2015–2020), the only gearbox the 4C was sold with.

Tonale nine-speed and six-speed automatics

The ZF nine-speed behind the Tonale’s 2.0L turbo and the six-speed torque-converter automatic behind the 1.3L plug-in hybrid, both shared with the Dodge Hornet. The seven-speed dual-clutch belongs to the European 1.5L mild hybrid and was never sold here.

1990s manuals and the ZF 4HP18

The 164 Sedan (1991–1995) had a five-speed manual or the ZF 4HP18 four-speed automatic; the Spider-2000 (1991–1994) a five-speed manual or a three-speed automatic.

FAQ

Used Alfa Romeo transmission questions, answered

How do I know which transmission my Alfa Romeo has?

It follows the engine and the model. A 2.0L Giulia or Stelvio has the ZF 8HP50, a Quadrifoglio the 8HP75, a 4C the dual-clutch, and a Tonale the nine-speed or — on the plug-in hybrid — the six-speed. The 164 Sedan and Spider-2000 could be manual or automatic, so check the car. Send us the VIN and we will confirm.

Are the Giulia and Stelvio eight-speeds interchangeable?

No. The 8HP50 is built for the 2.0L turbo and the 8HP75 for the 505 hp V6; they are rated for different engines and are not swapped for one another. Match the unit to the engine, not just the number of gears.

Will a Dodge Hornet transmission fit my Tonale?

The Tonale and the Hornet are built at the same plant with the same powertrains, so the nine-speed behind the 2.0L turbo and the six-speed behind the 1.3L plug-in hybrid are the same units. The transmission still has to match the engine and the model year, so send us your VIN.

Does a used Alfa Romeo transmission come with a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
