Hummer Engines
Finding the right Hummer engine
Hummer built three vehicles — the AM General H1 (1992–2006), the H2 (2003–2009) and the H3 (2006–2010) — and the brand ended in 2010. Its engines are not orphaned, though. The H2’s 6.0L and 6.2L V8s are the Silverado HD and Escalade engines, the H3’s five-cylinders and 5.3L V8 are the Colorado and Canyon engines, and the H1’s diesels are shared with the military HMMWV and AM General. That gives a used Hummer engine a far wider pool of donors than the number of Hummers would suggest.
Which engine a Hummer has depends on the model and the year — the H3 alone had three — and the GM engines are identified by RPO code, not by displacement. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the exact one.
Engine Families
The engines behind most Hummer vehicles
H1 6.2L and 6.5L diesels, 1992–2004
The 6.2L naturally aspirated GM/Detroit Diesel V8 in the 1992–1993 H1, the 6.5L naturally aspirated diesel from 1994 and the 6.5L turbo-diesel from 1996 to 2004, with a 5.7L gas V8 offered briefly in the mid-1990s. These are HMMWV engines, so supply overlaps AM General and military sources. The 6.5L is known for block cracking at the main-bearing webs — which AM General’s Optimizer 6500 addressed with higher-nickel iron and a girdle — along with overheating of the PMD injection-pump driver on 1994–2002 pumps, head cracks and oil-cooler-line failures that can seize the engine.
6.6L Duramax LLY — 2006 H1 Alpha
The Duramax turbo-diesel in the 2006 H1 Alpha, of which 729 were built, paired with the Allison 1000. It carries 23 H1-specific component changes, so an LLY from a heavy-duty truck is the same family but not a direct swap.
H2 6.0L LQ4 and 6.2L L92 V8s
The 325 hp 6.0L LQ4 in the 2003–2007 H2 and the 393 hp 6.2L L92 in the 2008–2009 H2, without active fuel management. Both are the same engines as the Silverado HD and Escalade of those years.
H3 3.5L L52 and 3.7L LLR five-cylinders
The 220 hp 3.5L L52 in the 2006 H3 only and the 242 hp 3.7L LLR from 2007 to 2010, shared with the Colorado and Canyon (L52 2004–2006, LLR 2007–2012). The 2006 L52 is widely reported for cylinder head and valve seat failures — a P0305 misfire leading to a head replacement, sometimes more than once — and the LLR corrected the head issue.
H3 5.3L LH8 V8
The 300 hp V8 in the 2008–2010 H3 Alpha, also used in the Colorado and Canyon, and offered only with the automatic.

FAQ
Used Hummer engine questions, answered
How do I find out which engine my Hummer has?
The eighth character of the VIN is the GM engine code, and the RPO list on the Service Parts Identification label in the glove box names it — L52, LLR or LH8 on an H3, LQ4 or L92 on an H2. The first three characters tell us the model: 5GT is an H3, 5GR an H2 and 137 an AM General H1. Send us the VIN and we will confirm.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Will a Chevrolet engine fit my Hummer?
For the H2 and H3, usually — the H2’s LQ4 and L92 are Silverado HD and Escalade engines and the H3’s L52, LLR and LH8 are Colorado and Canyon engines, so the donor pool is GM’s truck range. The RPO code and model year still have to match: a 2006 H3 takes the L52, a 2007 the LLR. The H1 is different — its diesels are AM General and military engines, and the 2006 Alpha’s Duramax has H1-specific parts that a truck LLY does not. Send us the VIN and we will match it.
Does a used Hummer engine come with a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
