Hummer Transmissions
Finding the right Hummer transmission
Every Hummer automatic is a GM unit: the TH400, 4L80-E and Allison 1000 in the H1, the 4L60-E, 4L65-E and 6L80 in the H2 and the 4L60-E in the H3 — the only Hummer also offered with a manual, the Aisin AR5 five-speed. The brand ended in 2010, but these units served GM’s trucks and SUVs for years on either side, so there are far more donors than there were Hummers.
Which one a Hummer has depends on the model, the engine and the year — the H2 changed units twice in seven years. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the right one.
Transmission Families
The transmissions behind most Hummer vehicles
H1 — TH400, 4L80-E and Allison 1000
The TH400 (3L80) three-speed in early H1s, the 4L80-E four-speed from the mid-1990s and the Allison 1000 five-speed behind the Duramax in the 2006 H1 Alpha.
H2 — 4L60-E and 4L65-E
The 4L60-E four-speed in the 2003–2004 H2 and the 4L65-E in the 2005–2007 H2, both behind the 6.0L V8. Replacement of these units in the H2 is widely reported, and the 4L60-E’s 3-4 clutch and sun-shell failures are documented across GM’s trucks.
H2 — 6L80
The six-speed automatic behind the 6.2L L92 in the 2008–2009 H2.
H3 — 4L60-E
The four-speed automatic offered with every H3 engine from 2006 to 2010, and the only transmission behind the 5.3L V8 in the H3 Alpha.
H3 — Aisin AR5 five-speed manual
The manual gearbox offered with the five-cylinder H3s from 2006 to 2010. It was not available with the V8.

FAQ
Used Hummer transmission questions, answered
How do I know which transmission my Hummer has?
The transmission’s RPO code is on the Service Parts Identification label in the glove box — M30 for a 4L60-E, MA5 for the AR5 manual, MYC for a 6L80. We can also identify it from your VIN.
Will a Chevrolet or GMC transmission fit my Hummer?
The H2 and H3 use GM’s own truck automatics, so a 4L60-E, 4L65-E or 6L80 from the GM truck and SUV range is the same family. It still has to match your engine, drivetrain and model year, so send us your VIN and we will confirm.
Is the H2’s four-speed a known weak point?
Replacement of the 4L60-E and 4L65-E behind the H2’s 6.0L V8 is widely reported, though there is no recall for it; the 4L60-E’s 3-4 clutch and sun-shell failures are documented across GM trucks. Owner complaints to NHTSA about the 2005 H2 also include coolant contaminating the transmission cooler, so have the cooler checked before a replacement goes in.
Does a used Hummer transmission come with a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
