Infiniti Engines

Finding the right Infiniti engine

Infiniti engines are Nissan engines, and the VQ V6 that powers most of the range was shared with the 350Z and other Nissan models, which widens the pool of good used engines. Infiniti renamed its line-up for 2014 — G to Q50 and Q40, G coupe to Q60, M to Q70, EX to QX50, FX to QX70, JX to QX60, QX56 to QX80 — without changing the engines underneath, and the quote form lists both names.

It also means a “3.5L V6” is not one thing. The VQ35DE, VQ35HR and VQ35DD are three different engines — blocks, heads and intake — and the 3.7L VQ37VHR with its VVEL valve gear a fourth, and none of them interchange. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the exact one.

Engine Families

The engines behind most Infiniti vehicles

VQ35DE 3.5L V6 — I35, QX4, G35, FX35, M35, JX35, QX60, 2001–2016

The original 3.5L in the I35 (2002–2004), QX4 (2001–2003), G35 sedan (2003–2006) and coupe (2003–2007), FX35 (2003–2008), M35 (2006–2008) and JX35 and QX60 (2013–2016), preceded by the VQ30DE in the 2000–2001 I30. Oil consumption on 2003–2006 engines is widely reported. The 2003–2004 G35 was recalled (03V455) for crank and cam sensors that cause stalling — a fault often mistaken for an engine problem.

VQ35HR and VQ37VHR — G35, G37, EX, FX, M, Q50, Q60, Q70, 2007–2019

The VQ35HR 3.5L, with a new block and dual intake, in the G35 (2007–2008), EX35 (2008–2012), FX35 (2009–2012) and M35 (2009–2010), and in hybrid form in the M35h, Q50 Hybrid and Q70 Hybrid; the VQ37VHR 3.7L with VVEL in the G37 (2008–2013), Q40, EX37 and QX50 (2013–2017), FX37 and QX70, M37 (2011–2013), Q50 (2014–2015), Q60 (2014–2016) and Q70 (2014–2019). Timing-chain tensioner and guide noise, and the VQ35HR’s oil-gallery gasket, are widely reported.

VQ35DD 3.5L direct injection — QX60, 2017–2024

The direct-injected 3.5L in the QX60 from 2017 to 2024. It shares its displacement with the VQ35DE and VQ35HR but is a different engine and does not interchange with either.

VK V8 — Q45, FX45, M45, FX50, QX56, QX80, M56, 2002–2024

The VK45DE 4.5L in the Q45 (2002–2006), FX45 (2003–2008) and M45; the VK50VE 5.0L with VVEL in the FX50 (2009–2013) and 2014 QX70 5.0; the VK56DE 5.6L in the QX56 (2004–2010); and the direct-injected VK56VD in the QX56 and QX80 (2011–2024), M56 (2011–2013) and Q70 5.6 (2014–2019). Timing-chain guide wear on the 2004–2010 VK56DE is widely reported.

VR30DDTT 3.0L twin-turbo — Q50, Q60, 2016 on

The 300 hp and 400 hp Red Sport twin-turbo V6 in the Q50 (2016–2024) and Q60 (2017–2022), followed by the 3.5L VR35DDTT in the 2025 QX80. Owners of early cars have reported repeated turbo failures, limp mode and engine replacement to NHTSA, but there is no recall.

Four-cylinders — QX50, QX55, Q50 and Q60 2.0t, QX30, 2016–2025

The KR20DDET 2.0L VC-Turbo in the QX50 (2019–2025) and QX55 (2022–2025), the Mercedes-Benz M274 2.0L turbo in the Q50 and Q60 2.0t (2016–2019) and its M270 cousin in the QX30 (2017–2019), and the supercharged QR25DER in the QX60 Hybrid (2014–2017). After an NHTSA investigation into main-bearing failures, recall 25V437 (June 2025) covers the 2019–2022 QX50 and 2022 QX55: bearing defects can cause engine failure, a breached block and fire, and the remedy is an engine-control software update, with owner letters sent in April 2026.

FAQ

Used Infiniti engine questions, answered

How do I find out which engine my Infiniti has?

The fourth character of the VIN identifies the engine, and the free NHTSA decoder returns the full code — VQ35DE, for example — from the first eight characters. The serial is stamped on the block; on a VQ it is on the rear face near the bellhousing. Send us the full VIN and we will confirm the exact version.

What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?

A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.

Can I put a VQ35HR in a car that came with a VQ35DE?

No. The DE, HR, VHR and DD are four different engines — blocks, heads, intake, valve gear and fuel system — and none of them interchange. The VIN tells us which one the car was built with, and we match that.

Does a used Infiniti engine come with a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
