Lexus Engines
Finding the right Lexus engine
Lexus engines are Toyota engines, and nearly every one was shared with a Toyota model — the 2GR V6 with Toyota’s own V6 cars, the V35A twin-turbo with the Tundra. That widens the pool of good used engines for any one model.
It also means a “3.5L V6” is not one thing. The 2GR was built as a port-injected FE, a direct-injected FSE and a later FKS, with different fuel systems, heads and controllers, and they do not interchange; the same goes for the VVT-i and non-VVT-i versions of the older MZ V6 and UZ V8. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the exact one.
Engine Families
The engines behind most Lexus vehicles
MZ V6 — ES300, RX300, ES330, RX330, 1997–2008
The 1MZ-FE 3.0L in the ES300 (1997–2003) and RX300 (1999–2003), and the 3MZ-FE 3.3L in the ES330 and RX330 (2004–2006) and RX400h (2006–2008). Early 1MZ engines (1997–2002) were prone to oil gelling that blocked oil passages; after a US class action Toyota agreed to overhaul or replace damaged engines free. The VVT-i 1MZ (from 1999 on the ES) and the earlier engine do not interchange, and the RX400h’s 3MZ has hybrid-specific ancillaries.
GR V6 — ES350, RX350, IS250, IS350, GS350, RC350, 2006 on
The port-injected 2GR-FE 3.5L in the ES350 (2007–2018) and RX350 (2007–2015); the direct-injected 2GR-FSE in the IS350 (2006–2017), GS350 (2007–2015) and RC350 (2015–2017); the 2GR-FKS in the RX350 (2016–2022), GS350 (2016–2020), ES350 (2019 on) and IS350 (2018 on); the 2GR-FXE and FXS hybrids in the RX450h (2010–2022) and GS450h; and the smaller 4GR-FSE 2.5L in the IS250 (2006–2015). FE, FSE and FKS are not interchangeable. On 2007–2011 2GR-FE engines the rubber VVT-i oil line could leak and empty the sump; Toyota’s limited service campaign 90K replaced it with a steel pipe, though the campaign expired at the end of 2021. Intake-valve carbon build-up on the IS250, with misfires and a rough idle, is widely reported.
UR V8 — LS460, GS460, GX460, IS F, RC F, LX570, 2007 on
The direct-injected 1UR-FSE 4.6L in the LS460 (2007–2017) and GS460 (2008–2011), the port-injected 1UR-FE in the GX460 (2010–2023), the 2UR-GSE 5.0L in the IS F (2008–2014), RC F, GS F, LC500 and IS500, and the 3UR-FE 5.7L in the LX570 (2008–2021). FSE and FE are different engines. Recall 10V309 (2010) covers 2006–2008 GS, IS and LS with the 2GR-FSE, 1UR-FSE and 2UR engines: foreign material in the valve-spring stock could let a spring break and stop the engine, and the repair is free.
UZ V8 and 2JZ six — LS400, LS430, GS300, GS430, SC430, LX470, GX470, to 2010
The timing-belt V8s: the 1UZ-FE 4.0L in the LS400, SC400 and GS400 (to 2000), the 3UZ-FE 4.3L in the LS430 (2001–2006), GS430 (2001–2007) and SC430 (2002–2010), and the 2UZ-FE 4.7L in the LX470 (1998–2007) and GX470 (2003–2009), which gained VVT-i in 2005 — the two versions do not interchange. The 2JZ-GE 3.0L straight-six powered the GS300 (1998–2005), IS300 (2001–2005) and SC300.
AR fours and 8AR turbo — ES300h, NX, IS200t, RC300, GS300, 2013–2021
The 2AR-FXE 2.5L hybrid four in the ES300h (2013–2018) and NX300h (2015–2021), and the 8AR-FTS 2.0L turbo in the NX200t and NX300 (2015–2021), IS200t and IS300 (2016 on), RC200t and RC300, and GS200t and GS300 (2016–2019). No engine-replacement pattern is documented for the 8AR.
Dynamic Force and V35A twin-turbo — ES, NX, RX, UX, LS500, LX600, GX550, 2018 on
The A25A 2.5L in the ES250, ES300h (2019 on), NX250, NX350h and RX350h; the M20A 2.0L in the UX200 and UX250h; the T24A 2.4L turbo in the NX350, RX350 (2023 on) and TX350; and the V35A-FTS 3.4L twin-turbo V6 in the LS500, LX600 and GX550. Machining debris can destroy the V35A’s main bearings: recall 24V381 (2024) covers the 2022–2023 LX600 with engine replacement, 25V767 (2025) extends it to the 2022–2024 LX and 2024 GX550 with inspection and replacement, and a further recall followed in 2026.

FAQ
Used Lexus engine questions, answered
How do I find out which engine my Lexus has?
The fifth character of the VIN identifies the engine, and the free NHTSA decoder returns the full code — 2GR-FE, for example — from the first eight characters. The family is also printed on the under-hood emissions label, with the serial stamped on the block. Send us the full VIN and we will confirm the exact version.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Which recalls should I check before replacing a Lexus engine?
Recall 10V309 (valve springs, 2006–2008 GS, IS and LS), Toyota’s campaign 90K for the 2007–2011 2GR-FE oil line, and the V35A main-bearing recalls 24V381 and 25V767 on the 2022–2024 LX600 and 2024 GX550, which are remedied by engine replacement. The fuel-pump recalls 20V012 and 20V682 on many 2017–2020 models cause stalling that can look like an engine fault. Have any open recall done first.
Does a used Lexus engine come with a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
