Mazda Engines
Finding the right Mazda engine
Mazda’s engines fall into a few clear families: the F-series fours in the Protege and 626, the MZR fours in the Mazda 3, Mazda 6, Mazda 5, CX7, Tribute and Miata MX5 from 2003 to 2015, Ford’s V6s in the Mazda 6, MPV Van, Tribute and CX9, the Skyactiv-G fours in almost everything since 2012, and the Renesis rotary in the RX8.
Within a family the engines are not all the same. The 2.3L turbo was revised for 2010, the Skyactiv 2.5L gained cylinder deactivation in 2018, and the 2.5L turbo is not a swap for the non-turbo 2.5L. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the exact one.
Engine Families
The engines behind most Mazda vehicles
F-series fours
The FS 2.0L in the 1993–2002 626 and the 2001–2003 Protege, turbocharged as the FS-DET in the 2003 Mazdaspeed Protege, and the FP 1.8L in the 1998–2001 626 and 1999–2000 Protege ES. On the FS, the screws of the variable-intake butterflies could work loose and be drawn into the engine, and some engines were replaced for it. The Miata MX5’s 1.8L BP and the K-series V6 in the 626 and Millenia are separate families.
MZR fours, including the 2.3L DISI turbo
The LF 2.0L in the 2004–2008 Mazda 3, 2006–2007 Mazda 5 and 2006–2015 Miata MX5; the L3 2.3L in the 2003–2008 Mazda 6, 2004–2009 Mazda 3, 2008–2010 Mazda 5 and 2004–2008 Tribute; the L5 2.5L in the 2009–2013 Mazda 6, 2010–2013 Mazda 3, 2010–2012 CX7 and 2009–2011 Tribute; and the L3-VDT direct-injection turbo in the 2007–2012 CX7 and the 2006–2007 Mazdaspeed 6 and 2007–2013 Mazdaspeed 3. Turbo engines built before 2010 are known for losing timing-chain tension, which lets the valve timing drift until pistons meet valves, and VVT actuator failure is widely reported. The CX7’s turbo is smaller than the Mazdaspeed cars’, and the engine was revised for 2010, so the two builds are not the same part.
Ford V6s
The 3.0L Duratec in the 2003–2008 Mazda 6 V6, 2002–2006 MPV Van and 2001–2008 Tribute, and Ford’s Cyclone V6 in the CX9 — 3.5L in 2007, 3.7L from 2008 to 2015. The Cyclone’s water pump sits inside the engine, driven by the timing chain, and when it fails it dumps coolant into the crankcase without warning, damaging head gaskets and rod bearings. Many CX9s need an engine as a result, and there was no recall.
Skyactiv-G
The PE 2.0L in the Mazda 3 from 2012, the CX5 from 2013 and, as a longitudinal variant, the Miata MX5 from 2016; the PY 2.5L in the 2014–2021 Mazda 6, the CX5 from 2014 and the Mazda 3, with cylinder deactivation from 2018; and the PY 2.5L turbo in the 2016–2023 CX9, 2018–2021 Mazda 6, CX5 from 2019 and Mazda 3 from 2021. The turbo and non-turbo 2.5L are different engines, as are the 2.5Ls before and after cylinder deactivation. The Skyactiv-D 2.2L diesel was sold here only in the 2019–2020 CX5, where fuel past the injector seals can raise the oil level.
3.3L turbo inline-six
The e-Skyactiv G 3.3L turbo six with a 48-volt mild hybrid in the CX-90 and CX-70 from 2024, in 280 hp and 340 hp versions, alongside a 2.5L plug-in hybrid. Both vehicles have had powertrain software recalls — 23V719 and 24V817 on the plug-in hybrid, 24V815 for loss of drive power and 24V816 for an engine that will not restart after i-stop — which should be done before a “dead” engine is diagnosed as a failure.
Renesis rotary
The 13B-MSP 1.3L twin-rotor in the 2004–2011 RX8, rated at 212–238 hp. Most failures are rotor side seals, often after worn ignition coils let unburnt fuel clog the catalyst and overheat the engine; carbon in the side exhaust ports can also stall it. Mazda extended the engine-core warranty on 2004–2008 cars.

FAQ
Used Mazda engine questions, answered
How do I find out which engine my Mazda has?
The eighth character of the VIN is the engine, and it decodes to Mazda’s two-letter code — PE, PY, L3, LF and so on. The same code is on the under-hood emissions label and stamped on the block. Send us the full VIN and we will confirm the exact version, including the model-year changes that matter for fit.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Will a Ford engine fit my Mazda?
Sometimes it is the same family: the 3.0L V6 in the Mazda 6, MPV Van and Tribute and the 3.5L and 3.7L in the CX9 are Ford engines. The MZR fours are cousins of Ford’s Duratec 20 and 23, not the same engine, and are not drop-in swaps. We match the engine to the vehicle it is going into, so send us your VIN.
Does a used Mazda engine come with a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
