Mazda Transmissions

Finding the right Mazda transmission

Mazda has taken its automatics from Ford, Jatco and Aisin as well as building its own, and the same unit often carries both a Mazda code and a Ford one — the FN4A-EL is Ford’s 4F27E, the FS5A-EL is the FNR5. Since 2012 nearly every Mazda has used the company’s own Skyactiv-Drive six-speed, joined in 2024 by an eight-speed in the CX-90 and CX-70.

Which unit a Mazda has depends on the model, the engine and the year: the Mazda 6 alone went through a Ford four-speed, a Ford five-speed and an Aisin six-speed before Skyactiv-Drive. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the right one.

Transmission Families

The transmissions behind most Mazda vehicles

Four-speed automatics

The F4A-EL and GF4A-EL behind the four-cylinder Protege and 626; the LA4A-EL, Ford’s CD4E, in the 626 V6 and the 2001–2008 Tribute; the FN4A-EL, Ford’s 4F27E, in the 2004–2008 Mazda 3 2.0L, the 2003–2005 four-cylinder Mazda 6 and the 2001–2003 Protege; and the RC4A-EL in the 2004–2005 RX8, replaced by a six-speed automatic for 2006–2011.

FS5A-EL five-speed (Ford FNR5)

Mazda’s version of Ford’s FNR5, in the 2006–2013 Mazda 3 with the 2.3L and 2.5L, the four-cylinder Mazda 6 from 2005 to 2013, the Mazda 5 and the 2010–2012 CX7 2.5L. The 2002–2006 MPV Van used a Jatco JF506E five-speed instead.

Aisin six-speeds

The Aisin TF-80SC behind the 2.3L turbo in the 2007–2012 CX7, and Aisin six-speeds in the 2007–2015 CX9 and the 2009–2013 Mazda 6 V6.

Skyactiv-Drive six-speed

Mazda’s own six-speed from 2012: the FW6A-EL in front-wheel-drive cars and the FW6AX-EL in all-wheel-drive ones, in the Mazda 3, Mazda 6, CX5 and the CX9 from 2016. It is a torque-converter automatic with a multi-plate lock-up clutch that engages across almost the whole speed range. The front- and all-wheel-drive units are different parts.

Eight-speed Skyactiv-Drive

The eight-speed in the CX-90 and CX-70 from 2024, behind the 3.3L turbo six and the 2.5L plug-in hybrid. It uses a wet multi-plate clutch in place of a torque converter. Recall 24V815 covered powertrain control software that could cause a loss of drive power on these vehicles, so have that checked before a lost drive is blamed on the transmission.

Manuals

Mazda has sold manual gearboxes alongside the automatics across much of its range, and a manual is matched by engine and model year in the same way. Tell us which engine the car has, or give us your VIN.

FAQ

Used Mazda transmission questions, answered

How do I know which transmission my Mazda has?

It depends on the model, engine and model year, and one model often carried two or three units in the same year. The code — FW6A-EL, FS5A-EL and so on — is on a label on the case. Send us your VIN and we will identify it.

What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt transmission?

A used transmission is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt transmission has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured transmission has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.

Is a Mazda transmission the same as the Ford one with the same name?

Several are: the FN4A-EL is Ford’s 4F27E, the FS5A-EL is the FNR5 and the LA4A-EL is the CD4E. What matters is that the unit matches the engine, drive type and model year of the car it is going into, so send us your VIN and we will match it.

Does a used Mazda transmission come with a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
