Mini Engines

Finding the right Mini engine

Three engine families cover the modern Mini in the US: the Chrysler-built Tritec 1.6L of the 2002–2008 cars, naturally aspirated or supercharged in the Cooper S; the chain-driven Prince 1.6L (N12, N14, N16 and N18) of 2007–2016, turbocharged in the Cooper S; and the BMW B-series turbos from 2014 — the B38 1.5L three-cylinder and the B46/B48 2.0L four — across the Cooper, Cooper Clubman and Cooper Countryman.

A “Cooper S engine” is therefore one of four different things, and within the Prince family the turbo changed from the N14 to the N18 by model year. The faults follow the families too. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the exact one.

Engine Families

The engines behind most Mini vehicles

Tritec 1.6L (2002–2008)

The Chrysler/Rover joint-venture engine: 115 hp naturally aspirated in the 2002–2006 Cooper (R50) and 2005–2008 Convertible (R52), and supercharged with an Eaton M45 in the 2002–2006 Cooper S (R53) and 2005–2008 Cooper S Convertible, at 163 and later 168 hp. The 2006 John Cooper Works GP had 215 hp.

Prince N12 and N16 (naturally aspirated, 2007–2015)

The BMW/PSA 1.6L with Valvetronic: the N12 in the 2007–2010 Cooper hatch and Clubman (R56, R55), and the N16 in the 2011-on Cooper across the R55–R61 range, including the Countryman and Paceman. Recall 23V337000 covers corrosion of the footwell-mounted engine control module on 2007–2014 Hardtops and Clubmans.

Prince N14 turbo (2007–2010)

The direct-injection turbo in the 2007–2010 Cooper S and the 2009–2013 John Cooper Works (R55, R56, R57, R58, R59). This is the engine behind the cold-start timing-chain rattle — a 2013 service bulletin addressed the failing chains and tensioners — and its high-pressure fuel pump is a separate known weakness. The 2007–2010 Cooper S and JCW were recalled twice, under 12V008000 and 18V248000, because the electric auxiliary turbo water pump could overheat and catch fire, and owners of 2008 cars also report leaking turbo oil-feed lines.

Prince N18 turbo (2011–2016)

The later turbo with Valvetronic: the 2011–2015 Cooper S hatch, Clubman and Convertible, the 2011–2016 Countryman S (R60) and the 2013–2016 Paceman S (R61). It is not the same engine as the N14; the changeover on the Cooper S came around the 2011 model year, while the John Cooper Works kept the N14 to 2013.

B38 1.5L three-cylinder (2014 on)

BMW’s turbo three in the 2014-on Cooper hatch and Convertible (F55, F56, F57), the 2015–2019 Clubman (F54), the 2017-on Countryman (F60) and, with mild-hybrid assistance, the 2024-on Countryman (U25).

B46 and B48 2.0L four (2014 on)

The turbo four in the Cooper S and John Cooper Works hatch (2014 on), Clubman and Countryman; the 2020 GP had 306 hp, and the 2018 B48TU update brought a one-piece timing chain. The B46 is the SULEV version sold in the US and is essentially the same engine. From the 2025 model year the base Cooper (F66) also uses a 2.0L B48, at 161 hp, with the Cooper S at 201 hp.

FAQ

Used Mini engine questions, answered

How do I find out which engine my Mini has?

The engine code (N14B16A, N18B16A, B48A20A and so on) is stamped on the block and printed on the vehicle data label. The model year settles the most common question: a 2007–2010 Cooper S has the N14 and a 2011-on Cooper S the N18, though the John Cooper Works kept the N14 to 2013. Send us the VIN and we will confirm the exact version. On our quote form the models are listed as Cooper, Cooper Clubman, Cooper Countryman and Cooper Paceman.

What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?

A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.

Is the Mini timing-chain “death rattle” covered by a recall?

There is no recall for it. The rattle belongs to the N14 turbo in the 2007–2010 Cooper S and 2009–2013 John Cooper Works: a 2013 service bulletin covered the failing chains and tensioners, and a class action over them is widely reported to have settled in late 2015. The warning sign is a rattle on cold start, and owners report chains breaking at around 55,000 miles. The two recalls on the same cars, 12V008000 and 18V248000, are for the turbo water pump, not the chain, and the 2011-on N18 is a different engine.

Does a used Mini engine come with a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
