Mini Transmissions
Finding the right Mini transmission
The first modern Cooper came with a ZF CVT that has a well-documented failure record, after which Mini settled on Aisin six-speed automatics for a decade before moving to an Aisin eight-speed and a Getrag seven-speed dual-clutch. Manuals have been offered throughout, and in the first-generation cars the Cooper and the Cooper S never shared an automatic.
Which one a Mini has depends on the model, the engine and the year: a 2004 Cooper automatic is a CVT, a 2005 Cooper S automatic is an Aisin six-speed, and a 2019 Cooper automatic is usually a dual-clutch. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the right one.
Transmission Families
The transmissions behind most Mini vehicles
ZF VT1F CVT (2002–2006)
The automatic in the 2002–2006 Cooper (R50) — never the Cooper S. Owners report RPM flare, the car stuck in first gear and outright failure, typically between 57,000 and 86,000 miles.
Aisin six-speed automatics (2005–2018)
First in the 2005–2006 Cooper S (R53), with paddles, as its only automatic. Then the TF-60SN (6F21WA) Steptronic across the whole 2007–2016 R-series — Cooper and Cooper S hatch, Clubman, Convertible, Countryman and Paceman (R55–R61) — and in the 2014-on F-series cars until about 2018. Recall 14V789000 updated the transmission control software on the 2015 Cooper.
Aisin AWF8F35 eight-speed
The eight-speed automatic in the Clubman (F54) and Countryman (F60) Cooper S and John Cooper Works, and an eight-speed automatic is offered again in the 2024-on Countryman (U25).
Getrag 7DCT300 seven-speed dual-clutch (2018 on)
The dual-clutch that replaced the six-speed automatic on most hatch and Clubman models from the 2018 facelift. The 2025-model-year Cooper (F66) is seven-speed dual-clutch only, and the U25 Countryman offers it alongside the eight-speed.
Manuals
The Rover R65 five-speed in the 2002–2004 Cooper, the Getrag 52BG five-speed in the 2005–2006 Cooper, the Getrag G285 six-speed in the first-generation Cooper S, and a six-speed on the 2007–2016 R-series and the 2014-on F54, F55, F56, F57 and F60.

FAQ
Used Mini transmission questions, answered
How do I know which transmission my Mini has?
By model, engine and model year. A 2002–2006 Cooper automatic is the VT1F CVT and a 2005–2006 Cooper S automatic is an Aisin six-speed; the 2007–2016 cars have the Aisin TF-60SN six-speed or a six-speed manual; and from 2018 an automatic hatch or Clubman is usually the 7DCT300 dual-clutch, while the Clubman and Countryman Cooper S and JCW have the Aisin eight-speed. Send us your VIN and we will identify it. On our quote form the models are listed as Cooper, Cooper Clubman, Cooper Countryman and Cooper Paceman.
Is the Mini CVT covered by an extended warranty?
A class-action settlement over the 2002–2006 Cooper CVT is widely reported to have extended its coverage to 8 years or 150,000 miles, but owners on the NHTSA complaint record describe missing its claim deadline, so do not count on it. The CVT was only ever fitted to the Cooper, not the Cooper S, whose 2005–2006 automatic is an Aisin six-speed.
Are the automatics interchangeable between a Cooper and a Cooper S?
No. In the first generation the Cooper’s CVT and the Cooper S’s Aisin six-speed are entirely different units, and in the later cars the Aisin six-speed, the Aisin eight-speed and the 7DCT300 went to different models and engines. The automatics are also software-controlled — the 2015 Cooper’s transmission control module was recalled under 14V789000 for an update — so match the unit to the car and the engine, not just to the number of gears.
Does a used Mini transmission come with a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
