Saturn Engines
Finding the right Saturn engine
Saturn closed in October 2010, so no new Saturn engines are built. Replacement units come from dismantled Saturns and, for almost every model built after 2000, from the GM, Honda and Opel siblings that used the same engine: the Ecotec fours and the 3.5L, 3.9L and 3.6L V6s were fitted across Chevrolet, Pontiac and GMC, the Vue’s 3.5L is a Honda engine, and the Astra is an Opel with a Belgium-built 1.8L.
The 1.9L in the S Series was Saturn’s own engine and changed several times over its life, and the later cars often offered two or three engines in the same year. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the exact one.
Engine Families
The engines behind most Saturn vehicles
1.9L four — S Series
Saturn’s own aluminum four, on a timing chain, in every S Series from 1991 to 2002: the SOHC LK0 (1991–1994, 85 hp) and L24 (1995–2002, 100 hp) in the SL, SL1, SC1 and SW1, and the DOHC LL0 (124 hp) in the SL2, SC2 and SW2. There are three different chain sets (SOHC, DOHC to 1998, DOHC from 1999) and a 1999 head and piston redesign, so the year matters. The 1992–1998 SOHC engine is known for a hairline crack at the fifth cam journal that puts oil in the coolant; Saturn ran an unadvertised head-replacement policy for it at the time. The DOHC engine went through several piston redesigns for oil consumption.
Ecotec 2.2L and 2.4L, and the 2.0L supercharged and turbo
The L61 2.2L in the L Series (from 2000), Ion (2003–2007) and Vue (2002–2007); the LE5 2.4L in the Ion (2006–2007), Sky (2007–2009), Aura (2008–2009) and Vue (2008–2010), with the LAT mild-hybrid version in the Vue and Aura Green Line (2007–2010); the LSJ 2.0L supercharged in the Ion Red Line (2004–2007); and the LNF 2.0L direct-injection turbo in the Sky Red Line (2007–2010, 260 hp). Recall 07V519000 covered timing-chain links separating on the 2001 L Series 2.2L, which stalls the engine. A 2004 Ion, 2004 Vue or 2008 Sky that shuts off while driving may be the ignition-switch recalls (14V047000, 14V171000, 14V490000) rather than the engine.
3.0L V6 (L81) — L Series and Vue
An Opel-derived 54-degree DOHC V6 on a timing belt, in the L Series (2000–2005) and the 2002–2003 Vue. Being belt-driven, the belt’s service history matters on a used one.
Honda 3.5L V6 — Vue 2004–2007
Honda’s J35 V6 (GM code L66), fitted only to the 2004–2007 Vue and paired with a Honda five-speed automatic. It is a Honda engine, so Honda donors widen the supply.
3.5L and 3.9L pushrod V6s
GM’s 60-degree overhead-valve V6s: the LZ4 3.5L in the Aura XE (2007–2008) and Vue (2008–2010), and the LX9 3.5L and LZ9 3.9L in the Relay (2005–2007).
3.6L V6 — LY7 and LLT
GM’s High Feature V6: the LY7 in the Aura XR (2007–2009), Outlook (2007–2008) and Vue XR and Red Line (2008–2010), and the direct-injection LLT in the 2009–2010 Outlook. The two are not interchangeable — the LLT has a different fuel system. Timing-chain wear on the 2007–2009 Outlook and Aura is the documented fault; the 2009 Outlook was included in GM Special Coverage 11340.

FAQ
Used Saturn engine questions, answered
How do I find out which engine my Saturn has?
The eighth character of the VIN is the GM engine code — LL0 for the 1.9L DOHC, L61 for the 2.2L, L66 for the Honda 3.5L, LY7 for the 3.6L and so on — and the RPO codes are listed on the Service Parts Identification label in the glovebox or under the spare-tire cover. Send us the full VIN and we will confirm the exact version, including the model-year changes that matter for fit.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Will a Chevrolet, Pontiac or Honda engine fit my Saturn?
Often, yes. After 2000 nearly every Saturn engine was shared: the Ecotec fours and the 3.5L, 3.9L and 3.6L V6s were fitted across Chevrolet, Pontiac and GMC, and the Vue’s 3.5L is Honda’s J35. The 1.9L in the S Series was Saturn’s own, so those come from dismantled S Series cars. We match the engine to the vehicle it is going into, so send us your VIN.
Does a used Saturn engine come with a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
