Saturn Transmissions

Finding the right Saturn transmission

Saturn closed in October 2010. Its early cars used Saturn-built transmissions, but from 2000 on almost every unit was a GM, Honda or Opel sibling — the 4T45-E and the six-speeds were fitted across Chevrolet, Pontiac and GMC, and the Vue’s five-speed came with its Honda V6 — so replacement units come from dismantled Saturns and from those donors.

Which one a Saturn has depends on the model, the engine and the year; the 2002–2007 Vue alone was built with four different automatics and a manual. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the right one.

Transmission Families

The transmissions behind most Saturn vehicles

Saturn-built units — S Series

The MP6 (SOHC) and MP7 (DOHC) four-speed automatics and the MP2 and MP3 five-speed manuals, matched to the engine in front of them, in every S Series from 1991 to 2002. These were built by Saturn for the S Series, so a used one comes from a dismantled S Series.

4T40-E and 4T45-E four-speeds

GM’s front-drive four-speed: the 4T40-E and then the 4T45-E in the L Series, the Ion (2005–2007), the Vue with the 2.2L (2005–2007, RPO MN5) and with the 2.4L and hybrid (2008–2010), and the Aura with the 2.4L (2008), the 3.5L and the hybrid. The Relay has the larger 4T65-E. Recalls 12V460000 and 14V224000 covered shift cables on the 2007–2008 Aura that let it come out of Park, and 08V200000 a transmission-case casting defect on the 2008 Vue that can make the park pawl fail.

VTi CVT — Vue and Ion

GM’s VT25-E continuously variable transmission, fitted to the 2.2L Vue (2002–2005, RPO M75 front-drive and M16 all-wheel-drive) and the 2.2L Ion (2003–2004). It is the Saturn transmission with the worst record: NHTSA and owner reports put failures mostly between 88,000 and 170,000 miles, rebuild or replace is the usual fix, and GM dropped it after 2005 citing poor reliability. Replacement units come from dismantled 2002–2005 Vues and 2003–2004 Ions.

Five-speed automatics — Aisin AF33 and the Honda unit

The Aisin AF33 five-speed in the Ion (to 2005) and behind the 3.0L V6 in the 2002–2003 Vue, and Honda’s five-speed automatic (RPO MJ7 front-drive, MJ8 all-wheel-drive) that came with the Honda 3.5L V6 in the 2004–2007 Vue.

Six-speed automatics — 6T70, 6T75 and 6T40

GM’s six-speeds in the last Saturns: the 6T70 behind the 3.5L and 3.6L in the 2008–2010 Vue and the 3.6L Aura, the 6T40 with the 2.4L in the 2009 Aura, and a 6T70-family six-speed in the Outlook (2007–2010). The Outlook’s is the same unit as the GMC Acadia’s, whose 6T75 had a documented 3-5-reverse wave-plate fracture, typically around 87,000 miles, and a GM special coverage for 2007–2009 cars.

Sky, Astra and the manuals

The rear-drive Sky has the Aisin AR5 five-speed manual or the 5L40-E five-speed automatic. The Astra has a five-speed manual or a four-speed Aisin automatic. Elsewhere, the Getrag F35 five-speed was the manual in the L Series (to 2004) and the Ion Red Line, and the F23 in the Ion (2003–2004) and the 2002–2007 Vue.

FAQ

Used Saturn transmission questions, answered

How do I know which transmission my Saturn has?

It depends on the model, engine and model year — a 2004 Vue could have the VTi CVT, the Honda five-speed or a manual. The RPO codes on the Service Parts Identification label in the glovebox or under the spare-tire cover name it (M75 or M16 for the VTi, MJ7 or MJ8 for the Honda unit, MN5 for the 4T45-E). Send us your VIN and we will identify it.

Is the VTi CVT in my Vue or Ion a known problem?

Yes. Failures on the 2002–2005 Vue and 2003–2004 Ion are well documented, mostly between 88,000 and 170,000 miles, and GM withdrew the unit after 2005. If yours has failed, the usual fix is a rebuilt or replacement unit; tell us which car it is and whether it is front- or all-wheel drive.

Will a transmission from a Chevrolet or GMC fit my Saturn?

For the 2000-on cars, usually: the 4T45-E, 6T40 and 6T70 are GM units shared with Chevrolet, Pontiac and GMC, and the Outlook’s six-speed is the same as the GMC Acadia’s. The S Series units were Saturn-built and the 2004–2007 Vue’s five-speed is Honda’s, so those come from their own donors. We match the unit to the engine and drive type it is going into, so send us your VIN.

Does a used Saturn transmission come with a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
