Scion Engines

Finding the right Scion engine

Scion was Toyota’s youth brand, sold from 2004 until Toyota retired it in August 2016, and every Scion engine is a Toyota, Subaru or Mazda engine under another badge. That is good for supply: a replacement comes from a dismantled Scion or, just as often, from the Toyota sibling that used the same engine — the Camry and RAV4 for the tC, the Corolla for the xD and iM, the Echo and Yaris for the xA and xB.

The exceptions are the iQ, whose 1.3L has no US sibling, the FRS, which shares its flat-four with the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86, and the iA, which is a Mazda. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the exact one.

Engine Families

The engines behind most Scion vehicles

1NZ-FE 1.5L and 1NR-FE 1.3L

The 1NZ-FE in the first xA and xB (2004–2006) is the Echo and Yaris engine. The 1NR-FE 1.3L in the iQ (2012–2015) was used in nothing else sold in the US, so a used one comes from another iQ.

2AZ-FE 2.4L — tC and xB

The 2005–2010 tC and 2008–2015 xB use the 2.4L shared with the Camry and Solara (2002–2011), RAV4 (2004–2012), Highlander (2001–2007), Corolla XRS and Matrix. It is the Scion engine with a documented fault: oil consumption from the piston rings (Toyota bulletin 0094-11), which Toyota covered under Warranty Enhancement Program ZE7 — piston and ring replacement for engines using more than a quart per 1,200 miles, within ten years and 150,000 miles — on the 2007–2010 tC and 2008–2015 xB. ZE7 ended on 31 October 2016, so an engine that burns oil now is outside that cover, and this is a common reason to buy a replacement. Rear head-bolt threads pulling out of the block are also reported.

2AR-FE 2.5L — tC 2011–2016

The second-generation tC’s engine, carried over from the Camry (2010–2017) and also in the RAV4 (2009–2018). No widely documented fault pattern in Scion use.

2ZR 1.8L — xD and iM

The 2ZR-FE in the xD (2008–2014) is the Corolla and Matrix engine, and the 2ZR-FAE with Valvematic in the 2016 iM carried on in the 2017–2018 Corolla iM. Neither has a widely documented fault pattern.

FA20 2.0L flat-four — FRS

The Subaru-built boxer (Toyota code 4U-GSE) in the 2013–2016 FRS, shared with the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86. Recall 18V772000 covered valve springs that can fracture and stall the engine on the 2013 car; dealers replaced the springs from December 2018, so check whether it was done.

Mazda 1.5L — iA

The 2016 iA is a Mexico-built Mazda2 with Mazda’s 1.5L Skyactiv-G (P5-VPS), and the same car carried on as the 2017–2018 Toyota Yaris iA. Mazda and Yaris iA donors are the supply.

FAQ

Used Scion engine questions, answered

How do I find out which engine my Scion has?

Scions use Toyota’s VIN layout, so characters four to six identify the series and engine, and the first three say who built it — JT for Toyota in Japan, JF1 for Subaru (FRS) and 3MY for Mazda in Mexico (iA). The engine code is also cast or stamped on the block. Send us the full VIN and we will confirm the exact version.

What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?

A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.

Will a Toyota engine fit my Scion?

In most cases, yes, because it is the same engine: the tC’s 2AZ-FE and 2AR-FE are Camry and RAV4 engines, the xD’s 2ZR-FE is the Corolla’s, and the 1NZ-FE in the xA and xB came from the Echo and Yaris. The FRS shares its FA20 with the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86, and the iA’s 1.5L is a Mazda. The iQ’s 1NR-FE has no US sibling. We match the engine to the vehicle it is going into, so send us your VIN.

Does a used Scion engine come with a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
