Scion Transmissions
Finding the right Scion transmission
Scion was sold from 2004 until Toyota retired the brand in August 2016, and its transmissions are Toyota and Aisin units shared with Toyota’s own cars, plus a Mazda unit in the iA. Replacement units come from dismantled Scions and from the Toyota siblings that carried the same unit.
Which one a Scion has depends on the model, the engine and the year — a tC, for example, had a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic to 2010 and six-speeds of both kinds from 2011. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the right one.
Transmission Families
The transmissions behind most Scion vehicles
Four-speed automatics — U241E and the small cars
The U241E behind the 2.4L in the 2005–2010 tC and 2008–2015 xB, and a four-speed automatic behind the 1.5L in the 2004–2006 xA and xB and the 1.8L in the xD (2008–2014). No widely documented fault pattern in Scion use.
Five-speed manuals — E350 and E351
The E350 in the 2005–2010 tC and the E351 in the 2008–2015 xB, plus the five-speed manuals in the first xA and xB and in the xD.
Six-speeds — tC 2011–2016
The second-generation tC has the EB60 six-speed manual or the U760E six-speed automatic behind the 2.5L 2AR-FE. The U760E has no widely documented fault pattern in Scion use.
CVTs — iQ and iM
The iQ (2012–2015) was built only with the Aisin K41 CVT. The 2016 iM has the CVTi-S or a six-speed manual.
FRS
The 2013–2016 FRS has the TL70 six-speed manual (based on the Aisin AZ6) or the Aisin-Warner A960E six-speed automatic, the unit from the Lexus IS 250. Recall 16V075000 covered park/neutral interlock wiring that let the key come out when the car was not in Park.
Mazda six-speeds — iA
The 2016 iA has Mazda’s six-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic or a six-speed manual. The same car carried on as the 2017–2018 Toyota Yaris iA, so Mazda and Yaris iA donors are the supply.

FAQ
Used Scion transmission questions, answered
How do I know which transmission my Scion has?
It depends on the model, engine and model year, and most Scions offered a manual and an automatic in the same year. The transmission code is on a plate on the case, and the VIN tells us the model, engine and who built the car. Send us your VIN and we will identify it.
Will a Toyota transmission fit my Scion?
Usually, because the units were shared: the tC and xB automatics and manuals are Toyota units, the FRS automatic is the one from the Lexus IS 250, and the iA’s six-speeds are Mazda’s, carried on in the Toyota Yaris iA. Match the unit to the engine and model year, not just the number of gears — a 2010 tC and a 2011 tC take completely different units. Send us your VIN.
Is there a known transmission fault on Scions?
Not a pattern. The U241E and U760E automatics have no widely documented fault in Scion use, and the same goes for the manuals and the CVTs. The documented Scion problems are on the engine side — the 2AZ-FE’s oil consumption and the FRS valve-spring recall 18V772000 — not the transmission.
Does a used Scion transmission come with a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
