Suzuki Engines
Finding the right Suzuki engine
Suzuki left the US car market in 2012–2013, so no new Suzuki engines are built for it. Replacement units come from dismantled Suzukis and, for several models, from the sibling vehicles that used the same engine: the Geo and Chevrolet Tracker and Metro for the G-series and H-series, GM for the XL7’s 3.6L, Daewoo for the Forenza, Reno and Verona, and the Nissan Frontier for the Equator.
Suzuki’s own engines are the G-series, J-series and H-series, and most were revised during their lives — the 8-valve and 16-valve 1.6L are different engines, the 2.0L changed to a VVT version for 2010, and the 2.7L V6 gained VVT for 2006. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the exact one.
Engine Families
The engines behind most Suzuki vehicles
G-series four-cylinders
Suzuki’s small fours: the 1.3L G13 in the Samurai, Swift and two-door Sidekick, the 1.6L G16A in the Sidekick (1989–1998) and, from 1992, the 16-valve G16B, which went on alone into the Esteem (1995–2001) and Vitara (1999–2004). The Sidekick and Vitara were built at the CAMI plant in Ontario alongside the Geo and Chevrolet Tracker, and the Geo Metro uses the same engines, so Tracker and Metro donors fit. The 8-valve G16A and 16-valve G16B are not interchangeable.
J-series four-cylinders
Timing-chain engines: the 1.8L J18A in the Esteem (1999–2002) and Sidekick Sport (1996–1998); the 2.0L J20A in the Vitara (1999–2004, and again from 2006), Aerio (2002–2003) and SX4 (2007–2009); the 2.3L J23 in the Aerio (2004–2007); and the 2.4L J24B in the Kizashi (2010–2013) and Vitara (2009–2013). The 2010–2013 SX4 has the J20B with VVT, which does not interchange with the J20A. On a 2008–2011 SX4 that overheated or stalled, check whether recall 11V055000 (a belt tensioner spring that breaks and throws the belt) was done before blaming the engine; on a Kizashi, a fuel smell or cracked tank is covered by recalls 14V464000 and 18V769000 and is not an engine matter.
H-series V6
Suzuki’s 60-degree V6, also on a timing chain: the 2.5L H25A in the Vitara (1999–2005), the early XL7 and the Chevrolet Tracker V6 (2001–2004); the 2.7L H27A in the XL7 (2001–2006) and Vitara (2006–2008). VVT was added to the H27A for 2006, so pre-2006 and 2006-on engines differ.
3.6L V6 (N36A) — XL7 2007–2009
GM’s LY7 High Feature V6, built by Suzuki as the N36A for the 2007–2009 XL7 (252 hp). GM LY7 engines are the same family, but the Suzuki has its own accessories and mounts, so a GM donor has to be checked against the vehicle rather than assumed to fit.
Daewoo engines — Forenza, Reno and Verona
The 2004–2008 Forenza and Reno are the Daewoo Lacetti with a 2.0L D-TEC four (132 hp) on a timing belt. It is an interference engine, and a broken belt is widely reported as the usual reason one is replaced; stalling and head-gasket failures are also reported. The 2004–2006 Verona is the Daewoo Magnus with a 2.5L 24-valve inline-six (155 hp). On a Verona that overheated or stalled, check recall 05V507000 first — the power-steering pump pulley separates and takes the belt off.
Nissan engines — Equator
The 2009–2012 Equator is the Nissan Frontier, built at Nissan’s plant in Smyrna, Tennessee, with Nissan’s 2.5L QR25DE four (152 hp) or 4.0L VQ40DE V6 (261 hp). Engines from the Frontier, Xterra and Pathfinder fit.

FAQ
Used Suzuki engine questions, answered
How do I find out which engine my Suzuki has?
The first three characters of the VIN say where the car was built, which narrows it: JS2 or JS3 is Suzuki in Japan (Aerio, SX4, Kizashi, Vitara from 2006, XL7 to 2006), 2S3 is the CAMI plant in Ontario (Sidekick, Vitara to 2005, XL7 2007–2009) and KL5 is GM Daewoo in Korea (Forenza, Reno, Verona); the Equator was built at Nissan’s Smyrna plant. The engine code (G16B, J20A, H27A, J24B and so on) is stamped on a pad on the block. Send us the full VIN and we will confirm the exact version.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Will a Chevrolet Tracker or Nissan Frontier engine fit my Suzuki?
Often, yes, because many Suzuki engines were shared. The Geo and Chevrolet Tracker and Geo Metro use the same G-series fours, and the Tracker V6 is the H25A; the Equator is a Nissan Frontier, so Frontier, Xterra and Pathfinder engines fit; the Forenza, Reno and Verona have Daewoo engines. The XL7’s 3.6L is GM’s LY7 built by Suzuki, with its own accessories and mounts, so a GM donor needs checking. We match the engine to the vehicle it is going into, so send us your VIN.
Does a used Suzuki engine come with a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
