Suzuki Transmissions

Finding the right Suzuki transmission

Suzuki left the US car market in 2012–2013, and its transmissions came from several suppliers: Aisin automatics behind Suzuki’s own engines, a Jatco CVT in the Kizashi and SX4, Daewoo-sourced automatics in the Forenza, Reno and Verona, and Nissan units in the Equator. Replacement units come from dismantled Suzukis and, where the unit was shared, from the Daewoo and Nissan siblings.

Which one a Suzuki has depends on the model, the engine and the year, and some models carried two or three at once. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the right one.

Transmission Families

The transmissions behind most Suzuki vehicles

Aisin four- and five-speed automatics

The 03-72LE four-speed in the Sidekick, the Vitara (1999–2005, and with the 2.4L from 2009 to 2013) and the XL7 (2001–2006); the 60-40LE four-speed in the 2007 SX4; and five-speed automatics behind the V6 in the 2006–2008 Vitara and the 2007–2008 XL7. On a 2007 Vitara that rolls away in Park, recall 07V554000 covered a sticking shift-lock arm.

Jatco CVT — Kizashi and SX4

The Kizashi (2010–2013; every all-wheel-drive car, with a six-speed manual available on front-wheel-drive cars) and the SX4 (2010–2013, with paddles). No widely documented CVT fault has been found on either. Recall 14V811000 covers a shifter that can leave Park without the brake pressed on the Kizashi and the 2008–2011 SX4.

Daewoo-sourced automatics — Forenza, Reno and Verona

The four-speed automatics in the 2004–2008 Forenza and Reno and the 2004–2006 Verona (automatic only in the US) came from Daewoo. They are the Suzuki transmissions with a documented fault pattern: on the 2006 Forenza and Reno, NHTSA complaints are dominated by transmission range-sensor failures, slipping and shift faults at around 70,000 miles, and the 2005 Verona shows transmission replacements and shift faults at 40,000–90,000 miles.

Nissan units — Equator

The 2009–2012 Equator is the Nissan Frontier: a five-speed manual behind the 2.5L four and Nissan’s RE5R05A five-speed automatic behind the 4.0L V6. The 2005–2010 Frontier is known for the radiator’s built-in transmission cooler failing and coolant contaminating the automatic, and the Equator is the same truck, so have the radiator checked before a replacement goes in.

Manuals

Five-speed manuals across the Sidekick, Vitara, Esteem, Aerio and Forenza, and six-speeds in the 2010-on SX4 and the front-wheel-drive Kizashi. Recall 07V307000 covered a breaking shift-cable clip on the 2005 Aerio manual.

FAQ

Used Suzuki transmission questions, answered

How do I know which transmission my Suzuki has?

It depends on the model, engine and model year — a 2010 SX4, for example, could have the CVT or a six-speed manual. The transmission ID is on a tag or plate on the case, and the first three characters of the VIN say where the car was built (JS2 or JS3 Japan, 2S3 Ontario, KL5 Korea), which narrows it. Send us your VIN and we will identify it.

Can I use a Nissan Frontier transmission in my Equator?

Yes. The Equator is the Frontier built at the same Nissan plant, so the Frontier’s five-speed manual and RE5R05A automatic are the same units. Check the radiator at the same time: the Frontier’s transmission-cooler failure puts coolant in the automatic, and a replacement will go the same way if the radiator is left as it is.

Are the Forenza and Reno automatics a known problem?

Yes. Range-sensor failures, slipping and shift faults make up most of the NHTSA complaints on the 2006 cars, and the Verona has a similar record. The CVT in the Kizashi and SX4, by contrast, has no widely documented fault pattern.

Does a used Suzuki transmission come with a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
