Volvo Engines
Finding the right Volvo engine
Volvo built most of its US cars from 1997 to 2016 around one modular family — the “whiteblock” five- and six-cylinders — and from 2014 moved model by model to the 2.0L Drive-E four. In between came a Yamaha-built 4.4L V8, the transverse SI6 straight-six and a Ford-based 2.0L turbo.
Within each family the versions differ more than the badge suggests. A “2.5T” or a “T5” covered several engine codes over the years, and the T5 in an S40 is not the T5 in an S60. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the exact one.
Engine Families
The engines behind most Volvo vehicles
Whiteblock five-cylinders: 2.3T, 2.4T, 2.5T and 2.4
Volvo’s mainstay from 1997 to 2016: the 2.3L T5 in the S70 (70 Series), V70 and C70 and the first S60 (to 2004); the 2.4T and the 2.4L T5 in the S60 and V70 (2001–2009); the 2.5T in the S60, V70, XC70, S80 (80 Series) and XC90 (2003–2009) and the T5 in the S40 (40 Series), V50, C70, S60 and XC60 (2005–2016); and the non-turbo 2.4L in the S60, V70, S40 and V50. Blocked PCV oil traps, which blow out seals and leak oil, are widely reported across the family, and recall 13V592000 added a missing low-oil-pressure warning to 2012 five-cylinder cars.
Whiteblock six-cylinders and the twin-turbo T6
The 2.9L six in the S80 (1999–2004) and, before it, the 960 and S90; and the twin-turbo T6 — a 2.8L in the S80 (1999–2001), then a 2.9L in the S80 (2002–2006) and XC90 (2003–2005).
4.4L V8 (B8444S)
The Yamaha-built V8 in the XC90 from 2005 and the S80 from around 2007, both until the V8 was dropped around 2010. Always with all-wheel drive and the Aisin six-speed.
SI6 3.2L and 3.0L T6 straight-six (2007–2016)
The transverse six: the 3.2L in the XC90 and S80 (2007–2014), V70 and XC70 (2008–2015) and XC60 (2010–2014) — also used in the Land Rover LR2 — and the 3.0L turbo T6 in the S80, V70 and XC70 (2008–2015), XC60 (2009–2016) and S60 (2011–2015), at 285 hp to 2010 and 300 hp after, with a 345 hp Polestar version in the S60 and V60 (2014–2016).
Ford-based 2.0L turbo (2010–2014)
A four derived from Ford’s EcoBoost, badged 2.0T in the S60, XC60 and S80 (2010–2013) and T5 in the front-wheel-drive S60 (2013–2014) and XC60 (2012–2013). It is not the Drive-E engine that followed, and the two are easy to confuse.
Drive-E 2.0L fours and mild hybrids (2014 on)
Volvo’s own 2.0L four, introduced on the 2014 XC60 and the only engine family in the range since the fives and the SI6 were dropped around 2016: the T5 turbo, the T6 with both a turbocharger and a supercharger, the T8 plug-in hybrid, the T4 and T5 in the XC40 (from 2019), and the B5 and B6 48-volt mild hybrids from around 2020, which became the base engine in 2023. Owners of 2015–2017 T5 and T6 cars, and some 2018s, reported heavy oil consumption — as much as a quart every 500 to 1,000 miles — and cite a Volvo oil-consumption test bulletin and an extended coverage program; a class action was filed.

FAQ
Used Volvo engine questions, answered
How do I find out which engine my Volvo has?
On Volvos built up to 2009 the engine code is in positions 6 and 7 of the VIN — 59 is the 2.5T, 91 the T6, 85 the V8, 98 the 3.2L six. From 2010 it moves to positions 4 and 5. The full code, such as B5254T2, is also on the engine itself. Send us the full VIN and we will confirm the exact version.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
My S60 R or V70 R engine has cracked liners — what replaces it?
The 300 hp B5254T4 in the 2004–2007 S60 R and V70 R is known for cracked cylinder liners. The 2.4L B5244T5 from the ordinary S60 and V70 T5 is listed as a plug-in replacement for it, but it is a different engine from the non-R cars, so tell us whether you want a like-for-like R engine or the substitute. Either way, send us the VIN and we will match the right unit.
Does a used Volvo engine come with a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
