Volvo Transmissions
Finding the right Volvo transmission
Nearly every automatic Volvo has sold in the US since the late 1990s is an Aisin unit — the AW50 four-speed, then the AW55 five-speed, the TF-80SC six-speed and the TG-81SC eight-speed. The exception is the GM four-speed Volvo modified for the twin-turbo T6 in the first S80 and XC90.
Which one a Volvo has depends on the model, the engine and the year, and the same unit was matched to a dozen different engines over its life. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the right one.
Transmission Families
The transmissions behind most Volvo vehicles
AW50-42LE four-speed
The Aisin four-speed in the 850, S70 (70 Series) and V70 of the late 1990s and in the C70 to 2002.
GM 4T65EV four-speed (T6)
A GM four-speed modified by Volvo for the twin-turbo T6: the S80 (80 Series) T6 (1999–2006) and, in all-wheel-drive form, the XC90 T6 from 2003. Failures were common — the 2004 XC90 drew several times the transmission complaints of the 2003, and some owners had the unit replaced more than once — and there was no recall.
AW55-50SN five-speed (Geartronic)
The Aisin five-speed in the S60, V70, XC70 and S80 (2000–2009), the XC90 2.5T (2003–2006), the S40 (40 Series) and V50 (2004–2013) and the C30 and C70 (2006–2013). Early units were known to fail, some within 50,000 miles, and Volvo later released an upgrade package for them.
TF-80SC six-speed
The Aisin six-speed behind the V8, the SI6 and the later fives: XC90 (2005–2014), S60 (2006–2009 and 2011–2018), V70 and XC70 (2006–2016), S80 (2007–2016), XC60 (2009–2017), V60, and the S40, V50, C30 and C70 (2011–2013). Land Rover used the same unit in the LR2 and the early Evoque.
TG-81SC eight-speed
The Aisin eight-speed Geartronic in every Drive-E car from 2015 — XC90, S90 and V90, XC60, S60 and XC40 — with the TG-81SD version in the hybrids.

FAQ
Used Volvo transmission questions, answered
How do I know which transmission my Volvo has?
The transmission type is on a tag on the case, and the VIN gives us the model, engine and year that decide it: the engine code is in positions 6 and 7 on cars built up to 2009 and in positions 4 and 5 from 2010. Send us the full VIN and we will identify the unit.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt transmission?
A used transmission is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt transmission has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured transmission has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
My XC90 T6 transmission failed — is there a recall?
No. The GM four-speed behind the twin-turbo T6 in the early XC90 and the 1999–2006 S80 failed often, but there was never a recall for it. The XC90 needs the all-wheel-drive version; send us your VIN and we will match it.
Does a used Volvo transmission come with a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
