Engine Options
Which engine does your TL have?
The first TL, sold from 1996 to 1998, was named for its engine: the 2.5TL has a 2.5L inline-five (G25A4) and the 3.2TL a 3.2L V6 (C32A6), both mounted lengthwise. Every TL from 1999 to 2014 has a Honda J-series SOHC VTEC V6 mounted crosswise, in six versions across three generations: the J32A1 and the Type-S J32A2 in the 1999–2003 car, the J32A3 and the Type-S J35A8 in the 2004–2008 car, and in the 2009–2014 car the 3.5L J35Z6 with front-wheel drive or the 3.7L J37A4 with SH-AWD.
The table below lists what was offered when. Every generation offered two engines, split by trim or drivetrain, so we confirm from the VIN before we quote.
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5L SOHC inline-five | Code: G25A4 | 2.5TL, all years; 176 hp. |
| 3.2L SOHC V6 | Code: C32A6 | 3.2TL, all years; 200 hp. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3.2L SOHC VTEC V6 | Code: J32A1 | All years; 225 hp. |

| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3.2L SOHC VTEC V6 | Code: J32A3 | All years; 270 hp, quoted as 258 hp from 2006 under the revised SAE rating. |
| 3.5L SOHC VTEC V6, Type-S | Code: J35A8 | Type-S, 2007–2008; 286 hp. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
2.5TL or 3.2TL — 1996–1998
The first TL has either the G25A4 inline-five or the C32A6 V6, and the badge on the trunk lid says which. Both sit lengthwise and come from older Honda engine families, so neither fits a 1999 or later TL, and a later engine will not fit them.
Six J-series engines
The J32A1, J32A2, J32A3, J35A8, J35Z6 and J37A4 in the 1999–2014 car are all J-series V6s, but each belongs to its own years and trim. Match the engine code, not just “3.2L” or “3.5L”.
Front-wheel drive or SH-AWD
A 2009–2014 TL has the 3.5L J35Z6 with front-wheel drive and the 3.7L J37A4 with SH-AWD. The two are not interchangeable, so tell us which drivetrain your car has.
Type-S engines
The 2002–2003 Type-S has the J32A2 and the 2007–2008 Type-S the 3.5L J35A8, not the base engine of the same year. A Type-S needs its own engine.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and drivetrain before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common TL engine problems
Timing-belt failure — every TL
Every TL engine turns its camshafts with a rubber timing belt, and the J-series V6 in the 1999–2014 car is an interference engine: if the belt or its tensioner fails, the pistons strike the valves, and the damage often calls for a replacement engine. Ask when the belt, tensioner and water pump were last changed on any used engine, or replace them when it is fitted.
Valve cover and spark plug tube seal leaks — J-series V6, 1999–2014
As the rubber valve cover gaskets and spark plug tube seals harden with age, the J-series V6 starts to seep oil. Oil from the rear valve cover can reach the exhaust manifold and give a burning smell, and oil that collects in the spark plug wells can cause misfires. Check a used engine for wet valve covers and oily plug wells, and fit new gaskets and seals when it goes in.

FAQ
TL engine questions, answered
Which engine does my TL have?
By year and trim: the G25A4 inline-five in the 1996–1998 2.5TL and the C32A6 V6 in the 3.2TL; the J32A1 for 1999–2003 (J32A2 on the 2002–2003 Type-S); the J32A3 for 2004–2008 (J35A8 on the 2007–2008 Type-S); and for 2009–2014 the J35Z6 with front-wheel drive or the J37A4 with SH-AWD. Send us the VIN and we will confirm.
Will a 3.2L from a 1999–2008 TL fit my 1996–1998 3.2TL?
No. The 1996–1998 3.2TL has the C32A6, a different V6 from an older Honda family, mounted lengthwise. The 3.2L J32 engines in the 1999–2008 TL sit crosswise, and the two do not interchange in either direction.
Will a 3.5L from a front-wheel-drive TL fit my SH-AWD TL?
No. The 2009–2014 SH-AWD car has the 3.7L J37A4 and the front-wheel-drive car the 3.5L J35Z6, and the two are not interchangeable.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
