Transmission Options

Which transmission does your TL have?

The first TL, sold from 1996 to 1998, came only with a four-speed automatic, built for an engine mounted lengthwise and different for the 2.5TL and the 3.2TL. After that the TL had a four-speed automatic with SportShift for 1999, five-speed automatics from 2000 to 2011 and a six-speed automatic for 2012–2014, with six-speed manuals on the 2004–2006 base car, the 2007–2008 Type-S and the 2010–2014 SH-AWD. The 2000–2003 five-speed is the one with the well-known failure history.

The table below shows what was fitted when. A 1996–1998 unit fits no later TL, and the 2009–2014 car has separate units for front-wheel drive and SH-AWD, so we confirm from your VIN.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

A 1996–1998 TL needs a 1996–1998 unit

The first TL’s engine sits lengthwise, so its four-speed automatic is a different design from the transmission in any 1999 or later TL and will not fit one. The 2.5TL and 3.2TL units do not swap with each other either, so tell us which engine your car has.

Which five-speed

The TL used five-speed automatics from 2000 to 2011, and the unit changed with each generation, so a five-speed from one era will not simply bolt into another. We match by model year, trim, drivetrain and VIN rather than by gear count alone.

Front-wheel drive or SH-AWD

The 2009–2014 automatics come in front-wheel-drive and SH-AWD versions, and the 2010–2014 manual is SH-AWD only. Tell us which drivetrain your car has.

Manual or automatic, 2004–2008

The 2004–2006 TL offered a six-speed manual on the base car, but for 2007–2008 the manual came only on the Type-S. Both manuals have a limited-slip differential, so tell us the year and trim along with the gearbox type.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine, drivetrain and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common TL transmission problems

Third-gear clutch-pack failure — five-speed automatic, 2000–2003

The third-gear clutch pack wears out and its debris contaminates the fluid, bringing slipping, flared or harsh shifts and, in the end, transmission failure. On a 2000–2003 TL, ask whether the transmission has already been rebuilt or replaced, and consider a remanufactured unit.

Second-gear overheating — five-speed automatic, 2000–2003

Heat builds up at the second gears until their teeth chip or break, which can lock the transmission. Acura issued a recall for it, so check by VIN that the recall work was done on the car a used unit came from.

FAQ

TL transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my TL have?

By year: a four-speed automatic for 1996–1998, with separate units for the 2.5TL and the 3.2TL; a four-speed automatic with SportShift for 1999; five-speed automatics from 2000 to 2011, changing with each generation; and a six-speed automatic for 2012–2014. A six-speed manual was offered on the 2004–2006 base car, the 2007–2008 Type-S and the 2010–2014 SH-AWD. Send us your VIN and we will confirm the exact unit.

Will a transmission from a 1999 or later TL fit my 1996–1998 TL?

No. The 1996–1998 TL has its engine mounted lengthwise and a four-speed automatic built for that layout, while every later TL has its engine mounted crosswise. It needs a unit from a 1996–1998 TL with the same engine.

My 2000–2003 TL slips and shifts harshly. Is that the known fault?

Very likely. Slipping and harsh or flared shifts are the signs of the third-gear clutch-pack wear that affects the 2000–2003 five-speed. If the transmission needs replacing, a remanufactured unit is a safer choice than an untouched original from the same years.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
