Acura Transmissions
Finding the right Acura transmission
Acura used Honda’s own four-, five- and six-speed automatics for most of its history, then added an eight-speed dual-clutch, a ZF nine-speed and a ten-speed, with six-speed manuals on the sportier models and a CVT in the Integra.
Which one an Acura has depends on the model, the engine and the year, and a model offered with both front-wheel drive and SH-AWD, like the 2009–2014 TL, has a unit for each. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the right one.
Transmission Families
The transmissions behind most Acura vehicles
Four- and five-speed automatics
Honda’s own automatics in nearly every Acura until 2011, and in some models until 2014. The 2000–2003 five-speeds are the ones behind the clutch-pack failures, the warranty extension and recall 04V176.
Six-speed automatic
Honda’s six-speed from 2012, including the 2012–2014 TL.
Eight-speed dual-clutch
An eight-speed DCT with a torque converter in the 2015–2020 TLX 2.4 and the 2016–2022 ILX.
ZF nine-speed
The 9HP48 behind the V6 in the TLX and the MDX from around 2015–2016 to 2020. Early cars drew rough-shift complaints.
Ten-speed automatic
In the RDX from 2019, the TLX from 2021 and the MDX from 2022.
Manuals and the CVT
Six-speed manuals on the sportier models, including the 2004–2008 TL and the 2010–2014 TL SH-AWD, and a CVT in the Integra from 2023.

FAQ
Used Acura transmission questions, answered
How do I know which transmission my Acura has?
It depends on the model, engine and model year, and the front-wheel-drive and SH-AWD versions of the same car use different units. Send us your VIN and we will identify it.
Is a used 2000–2003 five-speed automatic a safe buy?
Not without care. Those units failed through third-gear clutch-pack wear, and replacements built before March 2005 often failed again. For a 2000–2003 TL or CL we recommend a remanufactured unit or one built after the redesign, not an untouched early used unit.
Do front-wheel-drive and SH-AWD Acuras share a transmission?
No. Where a model was offered both ways, as the 2009–2014 TL was, each drivetrain has its own unit. Match the transmission to the drivetrain as well as to the engine and year.
Does a used Acura transmission come with a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
