Kia Engines
Finding the right Kia engine
Kia’s engines are shared with Hyundai, so the same engine family turns up in a Kia and a Hyundai — a Sorento and a Santa Fe Sport, for instance. Each engine carries a family code such as G4KJ or G6DH, and that code with the model year is what identifies it: a “2.4L” or “2.0L” was built in port-injection, direct-injection and turbo forms that are not the same engine.
Before you order, check whether your Kia is still covered. Hyundai and Kia recalled Theta II, Nu and Gamma engines for rod-bearing and piston faults, and the class settlements that followed extended the warranty: a lifetime warranty on short-block repairs for rod-bearing failure on the Theta II GDI (Optima and Sportage 2011–2019, Sorento 2012–2019), as long as the knock-sensor software update has been installed, and 15 years or 150,000 miles on the engines in the 2024 Engine II settlement, including the 2014–2019 Soul 2.0L GDI, 2012–2016 Soul 1.6L GDI and 2011–2013 Sorento 2.4L MPI. If your engine qualifies, the dealer replaces it. If it does not, give us your VIN and we’ll match the exact one.
Engine Families
The engines behind most Kia vehicles
Gamma 1.6L four-cylinders
The 1.6L MPI in the 2010–2011 Soul, Rio and Forte; the Gamma II 1.6L GDI in the 2012–2019 Soul, 2014–2018 Forte and 2012–2017 Rio; the 1.6L turbo in the Soul Turbo (2017–2022), Forte GT and Seltos; and the 1.6L MPI in the Rio from 2018.
Nu 2.0L four-cylinders
The 2.0L MPI and 2.0L GDI in the 2012–2019 Soul, 2014–2018 Forte and base Sportage from 2017, the 2.0L GDI hybrid in the 2017–2020 Optima Hybrid, and the Smartstream 2.0L MPI in the Soul from 2020, Forte from 2019 and Seltos from 2021.
Theta and Theta II 2.0L and 2.4L
The 2.4L in the 2006–2010 Optima; the Theta II 2.4L MPI in the 2011–2013 Sorento and Sportage and 2011–2015 Optima; the 2.4L GDI in the Sorento (2012–2020), Optima (2011–2019) and Sportage (2014–2022); and the 2.0L turbo in the Optima SX, Sportage SX and 2016–2018 Sorento. The family behind the rod-bearing recalls.
Lambda V6s
The 3.3L and 3.8L in the 2007–2009 Sorento, 2006–2010 Sedona and Borrego; the Lambda II 3.5L in the 2011–2013 Sorento, 3.3L GDI in the 2014–2020 Sorento and Cadenza, 3.3L MPI in the 2015–2021 Sedona, 3.8L in the Telluride and 3.3L turbo in the Stinger GT. The 2003–2006 Sorento’s 3.5L is the older Sigma V6, not a Lambda.
Smartstream
Kia’s current family: the 2.5L GDI and 2.5L turbo in the Sorento from 2021, the K5 and the Sportage; the 1.6L turbo in the K5, Sportage and Seltos; the 3.5L in the Carnival from 2022; and the 2.0L MPI in the Soul, Forte and Seltos.
Hybrids and plug-in hybrids
The 1.6L GDI hybrid in the Niro, the 2.0L GDI hybrid in the 2017–2020 Optima, and the Smartstream 1.6L turbo hybrid in the Sorento Hybrid (2021 on), Sorento Plug-In Hybrid (2022 on), Sportage Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid (2023 on) and Carnival Hybrid (2025). A hybrid engine is matched to its motor and battery, so tell us if your Kia is a hybrid.

FAQ
Used Kia engine questions, answered
How do I find out which engine my Kia has?
The engine family code, such as G4KJ or G6DH, is on the engine label and on the build sheet, and the eighth character of the VIN identifies the engine. Send us the full VIN and we will confirm the exact version, including the model-year changes that matter for fit.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Will a Hyundai engine fit my Kia?
Often, because Kia and Hyundai share the same engine families — the Theta II in a Sorento is the same family as in a Sonata or Santa Fe Sport. But each family was built in MPI, GDI and turbo forms and changed between model years, so the engine code and the year have to match, not just the size. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
Does a used Kia engine come with a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
