Kia Transmissions
Finding the right Kia transmission
Kia’s transmissions are shared with Hyundai and have changed quickly: four- and five-speed automatics into the late 2000s, six-speeds through the 2010s, and since 2019 an eight-speed automatic, the IVT chain-type CVT and dry and wet dual-clutch units, each tied to a particular engine.
Which one a Kia has depends on the model, the engine and the year, and in many years one model carried two or three. Several of the newer units have had campaigns of their own, including one where the fix is a new transmission. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the right one.
Transmission Families
The transmissions behind most Kia vehicles
Four- and five-speed automatics
The four-speed in the 2003–2004 Sorento and the 2010–2011 Soul, and the five-speed Sportmatic in the 2005–2009 Sorento.
Six-speed automatics
The A6GF and A6MF six-speeds Kia used almost everywhere in the 2010s: Soul 2012–2019, Sorento 2011–2020, Sportage and Optima. A six-speed automatic of its own goes with the Sorento and Sportage hybrids and plug-in hybrids.
Eight-speed automatic
In the Sorento V6 for 2019–2020, the Sorento 2.5L from 2021, the K5 and the Telluride.
IVT
Kia’s chain-type CVT, the Intelligent Variable Transmission: Soul from 2020, Forte from 2020, Seltos 2.0L and Rio from 2021.
Dual-clutch transmissions
A seven-speed dry dual-clutch behind the 1.6L turbo in the Soul Turbo (2017–2022), Seltos 1.6T (2021–2023), Forte GT and Niro, and an eight-speed wet dual-clutch behind the 2.5L turbo in the Sorento from 2021, the K5 GT and the Hyundai Santa Fe 2.5T. They are different units.
Manuals
A five-speed in the 2010–2011 Soul and the mid-2000s Sorento, and a six-speed in the 2012–2021 Soul and the 2011–2014 Sorento 2.4L. Kia dropped the Soul’s manual for 2022.

FAQ
Used Kia transmission questions, answered
How do I know which transmission my Kia has?
It depends on the model, engine and model year — a 2020 Soul alone could have the IVT, a six-speed manual or the seven-speed dual-clutch. Send us your VIN and we will identify it.
Is the IVT a CVT?
Yes. The Intelligent Variable Transmission is Kia’s chain-type continuously variable transmission, fitted to the Soul and Forte from 2020 and the Seltos and Rio after. It is not a geared automatic, and a replacement has to be an IVT.
Does a replacement need programming?
On the IVT, the dual-clutch units and the eight-speed, yes. They are controlled by software that has to be matched to the vehicle, and Kia’s own fixes for IVT slipping and dual-clutch judder both include a control-module update.
Does a used Kia transmission come with a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
