Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Soul have?

The Soul has had five kinds of transmission in three generations: a four-speed automatic and five-speed manual in the first cars, six-speed automatics and manuals from 2012, a seven-speed dry dual-clutch behind the turbo from 2017, and Kia’s IVT — a chain-type CVT — behind the 2.0L since 2020.

The table below shows what was fitted when. Because the unit follows the engine, and a 2020 or 2021 Soul could have any of three, we confirm from your VIN.

2010–2011First generation (AM)
Five-speed manual1.6L and 2.0L.
Four-speed automaticMainly the 2.0L. We confirm 1.6L cars from the VIN.
2012–2013First generation facelift
Six-speed manual1.6L GDI and 2.0L.
Six-speed automatic1.6L GDI and 2.0L.
2014–2019Second generation (PS)
Six-speed manual1.6L GDI only.
Six-speed automatic1.6L GDI and 2.0L GDI; the 2.0L was automatic only.
Seven-speed dry dual-clutch (7DCT)1.6L turbo, 2017–2019.
2020–presentThird generation (SK3)
IVT (Intelligent Variable Transmission)2.0L; the only transmission from 2023.
Six-speed manual2.0L LX, 2020–2021. Dropped for 2022.
Seven-speed dry dual-clutch (7DCT)1.6L turbo GT-Line, 2020–2022.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Match the engine

The transmission follows the engine: the dual-clutch only came with the 1.6L turbo, the IVT only with the 2020-on 2.0L, and the 2014–2019 2.0L GDI was automatic only. A unit from behind the wrong engine will not do.

The IVT is not a geared automatic

Kia’s IVT is a chain-type continuously variable transmission that took over from the six-speed automatic for 2020. Make sure a quote is for an IVT if that is what your Soul has.

Check the campaigns first

Kia’s 2020 IVT campaign replaces the IVT if it is slipping, and its dual-clutch judder bulletin replaces the clutch assembly. Have the dealer check your VIN before you order.

Programming after fitting

The IVT and the dual-clutch are controlled by software, and Kia’s own fixes for slipping and judder include a control-module update. A replacement needs programming to the vehicle.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Soul transmission problems

IVT slipping — 2020–2021

The IVT can slip, with a lack of acceleration and the check-engine light on. Kia’s voluntary campaign of December 2020, for Souls built from November 2018 to April 2020, updates the control-module software and replaces the IVT if it is slipping.

IVT oil-pump controller — 2023

A capacitor in the IVT’s electric oil-pump controller was recalled on the 2023 Soul (recall 23V-531). Have it checked before suspecting the transmission itself.

Dual-clutch judder — 1.6L turbo, 2019–2020 builds

The seven-speed dry dual-clutch can judder on take-off. Kia bulletin TRA083 covers turbo Souls built from November 2018 to April 2020 with a new dual-clutch assembly and a control-unit update.

FAQ

Soul transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Soul have?

It follows the engine and year: a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual to 2011, six-speed automatics and manuals from 2012 to 2019, the seven-speed dual-clutch behind the turbo from 2017 to 2022, and the IVT behind the 2.0L from 2020. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

My 2020 Soul hesitates and the check-engine light is on. Is the IVT failing?

Possibly, but check the campaign first. Kia’s IVT campaign for 2020–2021 Souls reprograms the control module and replaces the IVT if it is slipping. If the car is outside the campaign, we can quote.

Is the Soul’s IVT the same as the Forte’s?

Kia used the IVT across the Soul, Forte, Seltos 2.0L and Rio, but the unit still has to match the engine and model year. Send us your VIN.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
