Engine Options

Which engine does your Soul have?

Three generations of Soul have used four engine families: the 1.6L Gamma and 2.0L Beta II in the first cars, the 1.6L Gamma GDI and 2.0L Nu from the 2012 facelift through the second generation, a 1.6L turbo on the Turbo and GT-Line from 2017 to 2022, and the Smartstream 2.0L MPI in every non-turbo Soul since 2020.

The table below lists what was offered when. The 2.0L has been built in both port- and direct-injection forms, and each version has its own recall history, so we confirm from your VIN before quoting.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Which 2.0L

The 2.0L was a Beta II to 2011, a Nu from 2012, a direct-injection Nu GDI for 2014–2019 and a port-injection Smartstream from 2020. They are different engines — match the code on the engine label.

Which 1.6L

The 2010–2011 1.6L is a port-injection Gamma; from 2012 it is the direct-injection Gamma GDI, and the 2017–2022 turbo is a third engine again. The code on the label separates them.

Check the recall first

Several Soul engines are replaced by Kia under recall or the Engine II settlement. Before ordering, have a dealer check your VIN for open recalls and the 15-year/150,000-mile cover described below.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and trim before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Soul engine problems

Catalytic-converter overheating — 1.6L GDI, 2012–2016

High exhaust temperatures damage the catalytic converter, and the abnormal combustion that follows damages the pistons and can break a connecting rod through the block. Recall 19V-120 adds overheating-protection software, replaces the converter and replaces the engine if it is already damaged. The Engine II settlement also gives these cars a 15-year/150,000-mile warranty on rod-bearing short-block repairs.

Connecting-rod bearing failure — 2.0L Nu GDI, 2014–2015

The rod bearings wear and can seize and puncture the block, with a fire risk. Recall 20V-750 inspects the engine, replaces it if needed and installs knock-sensor software that detects bearing knock and limits power. Under the Engine II settlement, 2014–2019 Souls with the 2.0L GDI have a 15-year/150,000-mile warranty on short-block repairs for this failure.

Piston oil-ring wear — 2.0L MPI, 2020–2023

Oil rings that were not heat-treated properly chip and scuff the cylinder bores, oil consumption rises and the rod bearings seize. Recall 21V-259 covers 2020–2021 Souls and recall 25V-099 covers 2021–2023 Souls built to April 2022; both install piston-ring noise-sensing software and replace the engine if it sets a code.

FAQ

Soul engine questions, answered

Which engine does my Soul have?

By year and trim: a 1.6L in base models to 2019, a 2.0L in the Soul+, Soul! and every non-turbo trim from 2020, and a 1.6L turbo in the Turbo and GT-Line from 2017 to 2022. The code — G4FD, G4NC, G4NH and so on — is on the engine label, and the eighth VIN character identifies the engine. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

My Soul is in an engine recall. Do I still need a used engine?

Possibly not. If the recall inspection finds damage, Kia replaces the engine, and the Engine II settlement extended the warranty on 2012–2016 1.6L GDI and 2014–2019 2.0L GDI Souls to 15 years or 150,000 miles for rod-bearing failure. Have a dealer check your VIN before you order; if the failure is outside the cover, we can quote.

Will a Forte or Seltos engine fit my Soul?

The Soul’s engines are shared across Kia and Hyundai: the 2.0L Nu was also in the 2014–2018 Forte, and the 2020-on Smartstream 2.0L is in the Forte and Seltos too. The code and model year still have to match. Send us your VIN.

Is the engine covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
