Which transmission does your Sorento have?

The Sorento has moved through four-, five-, six- and eight-speed automatics in four generations, with a manual offered only on the early body-on-frame truck and the 2011–2014 2.4L. Since 2021 the unit depends on the engine: an eight-speed automatic behind the 2.5L, an eight-speed wet dual-clutch behind the 2.5L turbo and a six-speed automatic in the hybrids.

The table below shows what was fitted when. Because the 2019–2020 and 2021-on Sorentos each carried more than one unit, we confirm from your VIN.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Match the engine

From 2019 the Sorento’s transmission depends on the engine: the V6 took the eight-speed while the 2.4L kept the six-speed, and from 2021 the 2.5L, 2.5L turbo and hybrids each have their own unit. A quote has to start with the engine.

Two eight-speeds

The eight-speed automatic behind the 2.5L and the eight-speed wet dual-clutch behind the 2.5L turbo are different designs that share a gear count. They are not interchangeable.

Check the recall first

Recall 22V-760 on the 2021–2022 2.5L turbo can end in a new transmission from Kia. Have the dealer check your VIN before you order one.

Programming after fitting

The eight-speed automatic and the dual-clutch are controlled by software, and Kia has issued shift-logic updates for the dual-clutch. A replacement needs programming to the vehicle.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Sorento transmission problems

Dual-clutch oil-pump fault — 2.5L turbo, 2021–2022

The eight-speed wet dual-clutch’s electric oil pump can fail: a warning tells the driver to stop safely, and within 20–30 seconds the car loses drive. Recall 22V-760 covers Sorentos built from October 2020 to August 2022 with an inspection, control-unit reprogramming and a replacement transmission where needed.

Dual-clutch shift quality — 2.5L turbo, 2021–2023

Rough or hesitant shifting on the dual-clutch is addressed by Kia bulletins SA502 and SA526, which update the gear-shift logic. Have the update done before suspecting the transmission.

Stalling that is the engine — 3.3L V6, 2017

A 2017 Sorento V6 that stalls may have the crankshaft defect covered by engine recall 17V-586, not a transmission fault. Have that recall checked first.

FAQ

Sorento transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Sorento have?

By year and engine: a four-speed automatic to 2004, a five-speed to 2009, six-speeds from 2011, an eight-speed automatic behind the V6 from 2019 and the 2.5L from 2021, the eight-speed dual-clutch behind the 2.5L turbo, and a six-speed automatic in the hybrids. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

My 2021–2022 Sorento 2.5T lost power after a stop-safely warning. Do I need a transmission?

Check recall 22V-760 first. That is the dual-clutch’s electric oil-pump fault, and Kia inspects the unit, reprograms the control unit and replaces the transmission where needed. If your car is outside the recall, we can quote a replacement.

Is the 2.5T’s dual-clutch the same as the Soul Turbo’s?

No. The Soul Turbo uses a seven-speed dry dual-clutch; the Sorento 2.5T uses an eight-speed wet dual-clutch also found in the K5 GT and the Hyundai Santa Fe 2.5T. Match by engine and model year.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
