Subaru Engines

Finding the right Subaru engine

Subaru builds flat-four and flat-six engines and shares them across its range, so the same engine turns up in a Forester, an Outback, a Legacy and an Impreza of the same year. Four families cover the US cars: the belt-driven EJ (1989–2021), the EZ flat-six (2001–2019), the chain-driven FB (2011 on) and the FA family (2012 on).

A “2.5L” is not one engine. The EJ25D, EJ251, EJ253, EJ255, FB25B and FB25D are six different 2.5L engines, and the FB replaced the EJ in different years in different models. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the exact one.

Engine Families

The engines behind most Subaru vehicles

EJ 2.2L and 2.5L (non-turbo)

The EJ22 2.2L of the 1990s Legacy, Impreza and Outback; the EJ25D 2.5L DOHC of 1996–1999 (Legacy GT, Outback, 1998 Forester); and the EJ251, EJ252 and EJ253 2.5L SOHC in the Forester (1999–2010), Legacy and Outback (2000–2012), Impreza (2000–2011) and Baja. Timing belts, and a head-gasket history.

EJ255 and EJ257 turbos

The EJ255 2.5L DOHC turbo in the Forester XT (2004–2013), Legacy GT (2005–2012), Outback XT (2005–2009), Baja Turbo and WRX (2006–2014), and the EJ257 in the WRX STI (2004–2021).

EZ30D and EZ36D flat-six

The 3.0L EZ30D in the Outback H6 (2001–2004), Outback and Legacy 3.0R (2005–2009) and early Tribeca, and the 3.6L EZ36D in the Tribeca (2008–2014) and Outback and Legacy 3.6R (2010–2019). Chain-driven, with no campaigns on record.

FB 2.0L and 2.5L

The port-injected FB25B in the Forester (2011–2018) and Legacy and Outback (2013–2019); the direct-injected FB25D in the Forester (2019 on), Legacy and Outback (2020 on), Crosstrek (2021 on) and Impreza RS; and the 2.0L FB20B and FB20D in the Impreza and Crosstrek. A 2016 settlement covered oil consumption on 2011–2015 cars.

FA turbos and the BRZ

The FA20F 2.0L direct-injection turbo in the Forester XT (2014–2018) and WRX (2015–2021); the FA24F 2.4L turbo in the Ascent (2019 on), Legacy XT and Outback XT (2020 on), Outback Wilderness (2022 on) and WRX (2022 on); and the non-turbo FA20D and FA24D in the BRZ.

Hybrids

The FB20X in the 2014–2016 Crosstrek Hybrid, the FB20V in the 2019–2023 Crosstrek plug-in, and the Atkinson-cycle FB25D with motors in the Forester Hybrid (2025 on) and Crosstrek Hybrid (2026 on). None is the same as the standard engine of the same size.

FAQ

Used Subaru engine questions, answered

How do I find out which engine my Subaru has?

The engine code is on a label or stamp on the block. The VIN identifies the engine on many Subarus but not reliably on all of them, so the safest check is the VIN plus the build label. Send us both and we will confirm the exact version.

What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?

A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.

Do all Subaru engines have head-gasket problems?

No. The history belongs to the 2.5L EJ engines: the DOHC EJ25D of 1996–1999 failed internally, and the SOHC EJ251 and EJ253 of 1999–2012 leak externally at the head-block seam. The later FB engines have a different record (oil consumption on some 2011–2015 cars), and the flat-sixes have no documented campaigns.

Does a used Subaru engine come with a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
