Subaru Transmissions
Finding the right Subaru transmission
Subaru has used its own 4EAT four-speed automatic, a Jatco-based five-speed, five- and six-speed manuals and, since 2010, its chain-type Lineartronic CVT in two sizes. Most units are shared across the range, so a Forester, an Outback and an Impreza of the same year often carry the same transmission.
Which one a Subaru has depends on the model, the engine and the year. The two Lineartronics are built for different torque levels, and the same model switched between them more than once. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the right one.
Transmission Families
The transmissions behind most Subaru vehicles
4EAT four-speed automatic
Subaru’s automatic from 1988 to 2013: the Legacy and Outback through 2009, the Impreza through 2011 and the Forester through 2013. Later cars have SportShift manual selection.
5EAT five-speed automatic
The Jatco JR505-based five-speed with SportShift, 2005–2014: Legacy GT and Outback XT (2005–2009), the 3.0R (2005–2009), the 3.6R (2010–2014) and the Tribeca (2006–2014).
Manuals
A five-speed on non-turbo cars to about 2013, and a six-speed in the WRX STI (2004 on), Legacy and Outback (2010–2014), Forester 2.5i (2014–2018), WRX (2015 on), Crosstrek (2018–2023) and Impreza.
Lineartronic TR580
The lighter CVT, rated around 250 Nm: Impreza from 2012, Crosstrek from 2013, Legacy and Outback 2.5 from 2013 and Forester 2.5 from 2014.
Lineartronic TR690
The high-torque CVT, rated around 400 Nm: Legacy and Outback 2.5i (2010–2012) and 3.6R (2015–2019), Forester XT (2014–2018), WRX (2015 on), Ascent (2019 on) and the Legacy and Outback 2.4L turbo (2020 on). Turbo and Sport trims add an eight-speed manual mode.
Hybrid transaxles
The TH58A in the Crosstrek Hybrid, and the power-split transaxle in the 2025-on Forester Hybrid, which Subaru still calls a Lineartronic. Neither is interchangeable with the TR580 or TR690.

FAQ
Used Subaru transmission questions, answered
How do I know which transmission my Subaru has?
It depends on the model, engine and model year, and one model year often had two or three units — the 2.5L and the turbo or flat-six rarely share one. Send us your VIN and we will identify it.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt transmission?
A used transmission is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt transmission has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured transmission has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Is my Subaru’s CVT covered by an extended warranty?
Possibly. Subaru extended the CVT warranty from 5 years/60,000 miles to 10 years/100,000 miles on the models listed in bulletins 16-107-17 (2010–2015 cars), 16-115-18 (2016–2017) and 16-155-25R (2019–2020), and the 2019–2021 Ascent, Legacy and Outback chain-slip recalls 21V-955 and 22V-485 can end in a replacement transmission from Subaru. Have a dealer check your VIN before paying for a unit.
Does a used Subaru transmission come with a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
