Transmission Options
Which transmission does your Outback have?
The Outback’s transmission has followed its engine: the 4EAT four-speed automatic from 1995 to 2009, with a five-speed manual alongside it on the four-cylinder cars, the Jatco-based 5EAT five-speed behind the 2005–2009 turbo and 3.0R and the 2010–2014 3.6R, a six-speed manual on the 2010–2014 2.5i, and Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT since 2010 — the TR690 behind the 2010–2012 2.5i, the 2015–2019 3.6R and the 2.4L turbo, and the TR580 behind the 2.5L from 2013.
The table below shows what was fitted when. The 2.5i switched from the TR690 to the TR580 in the middle of the 2010–2014 generation, so we confirm from your VIN.

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Match the engine
The transmission is matched to the engine: the 5EAT went only behind the 2005–2009 turbo and 3.0R and the 2010–2014 3.6R, the TR690 behind the 2010–2012 2.5i, the 3.6R and the 2.4L turbo, and the TR580 behind the 2.5L from 2013. A unit from a 2.5i is not right for a 3.6R.
TR690 or TR580 on the 2.5i
The 2010–2012 2.5i has the first-generation TR690 and the 2013–2014 2.5i the lighter TR580, in the same body. They are not interchangeable; the model year decides.
Final-drive ratio
The front differential is built into the transmission, and its ratio has to match the rear differential or the all-wheel-drive system wears out. Subaru used more than one ratio across the Outback’s engines and transmissions, so we match the ratio as well as the type.
Manual or automatic
A five-speed manual was offered on the four-cylinder cars from 1995 to 2009, including the turbo XT, and a six-speed on the 2010–2014 2.5i. There has been no manual Outback since 2015.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Outback transmission problems
Torque bind — 4EAT, 1995–2009
The 4EAT drives the rear wheels through a hydraulic transfer clutch at the back of the transmission. When the duty C solenoid that controls it or the clutch itself wears, the car binds, hops or drags in tight, slow turns. Mismatched tire sizes cause the same symptom and wear the clutch, so check that all four tires match before condemning the transmission.
Drive-chain slip — 2020–2021 2.4L turbo
Improper TCU programming can let the CVT’s drive chain slip, which can damage or break the chain and cause a loss of drive. Subaru recalled the 2020–2021 turbo Outback for it; the remedy reprograms the TCU and replaces the transmission if the chain has slipped or been damaged.
Judder pulling away — Lineartronic CVT
The Outback’s Lineartronic can judder or shudder when moving off from a stop or at light throttle. Have a Subaru dealer check the fluid and look for TCU software updates before you replace the transmission.

FAQ
Outback transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Outback have?
It depends on the engine and year: 4EAT or five-speed manual on the 2.2L and the non-turbo 2.5L to 2009 (the 1996 2.5L was automatic-only), and 4EAT only on the 2001–2004 H6-3.0; 5EAT behind the 2005–2009 turbo and 3.0R and the 2010–2014 3.6R; TR690 CVT on the 2010–2012 2.5i, the 2015–2019 3.6R and the 2020-on 2.4L turbo; TR580 CVT on the 2.5L from 2013; six-speed manual on the 2010–2014 2.5i. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
My 2020–2021 Outback XT lost drive. Is that the recall?
It can be. The 2020–2021 Outback with the 2.4L turbo was recalled for CVT chain slip, and where the chain has slipped or been damaged the remedy includes a replacement transmission from Subaru. Have a dealer check the VIN before you order a unit.
Is my Outback’s CVT under Subaru’s extended warranty?
Subaru extended the CVT warranty from 5 years/60,000 miles to 10 years/100,000 miles on the 2010–2015 Outback. The cover runs from the original sale date, so have a Subaru dealer check your VIN before paying for a replacement.
Will a Legacy transmission fit?
The Outback is built on the Legacy and uses most of the same transmissions, so a Legacy unit with the same engine, model year and final-drive ratio can be the right one. Send us your VIN and we will match it.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
