Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Forester have?

For sixteen model years the Forester had one automatic, the 4EAT four-speed, beside a five-speed manual. The 2014 redesign replaced both with the Lineartronic CVT — the TR580 behind the 2.5i and the high-torque TR690 behind the 2.0XT — plus a six-speed manual on base cars until 2018. Since 2019 the CVT is the only choice, and the 2025 hybrid has a transaxle of its own.

The table below shows what was fitted when. Because the two CVTs look alike but are rated for different engines, we confirm from your VIN.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

TR580 or TR690

The two Lineartronics are rated for different torque — roughly 250 Nm for the TR580 and 400 Nm for the TR690 — and only the 2014–2018 2.0XT has the TR690. A 2.5i unit is not a substitute.

Automatic or manual

Every automatic Forester from 1998 to 2013 has the 4EAT, with a five-speed manual beside it. The manual became a six-speed for 2014–2018 and was dropped from 2019, and the XT has been automatic-only since 2009.

Hybrid transaxle

The 2025-on Forester Hybrid uses its own power-split transaxle, not the TR580, even though Subaru calls both a Lineartronic. Tell us if your Forester is a hybrid.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Forester transmission problems

Torque-converter judder — Lineartronic, 2014 on

A shudder from the torque converter at low speed, and valve-body faults that set solenoid codes (bulletin 16-131-20R), are the complaints that put Foresters in for CVT work. Check the extended warranty below before paying for a unit.

Fluid seepage and sensor faults — 2014–2015

The TR690 behind the 2014–2015 2.0XT can seep fluid from the oil-pump chain cover (bulletin 16-103-16R, for 2010–2015 TR690s), and a secondary oil-pressure sensor fault sets code P0841 (16-102-16). Both have service bulletins, so have them checked before assuming the unit needs replacing.

Extended CVT warranty — 2014–2017 and 2019–2020

Subaru extended the CVT warranty from 5 years/60,000 miles to 10 years/100,000 miles: bulletin 16-107-17 covers 2014–2015 Foresters with either CVT, 16-115-18 the 2016–2017 cars, and 16-155-25R the 2019–2020 2.5 CVT. Subaru says the extensions were not in response to any specific condition. Cover runs from the original sale, so check by VIN with a Subaru dealer first.

FAQ

Forester transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Forester have?

A 4EAT four-speed automatic or five-speed manual from 1998 to 2013; from 2014 a Lineartronic CVT — TR580 on the 2.5i, TR690 on the 2014–2018 2.0XT — or a six-speed manual on 2014–2018 base cars; CVT only from 2019. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Will a 2.5i CVT fit my 2.0XT?

No. The XT has the high-torque TR690 and the 2.5i the TR580, which is rated for about 250 Nm. Match the unit to the engine.

Is my Forester’s CVT still under Subaru’s extended warranty?

Possibly. Bulletins 16-107-17 (2014–2015), 16-115-18 (2016–2017) and 16-155-25R (2019–2020 2.5) extended CVT cover to 10 years or 100,000 miles from the original sale. A Subaru dealer can check by VIN, and it is worth doing before paying for a replacement.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
