Which engine does your Outback have?
Seven generations of Outback have run on four engine families: the belt-driven EJ flat-fours to 2012 — the 2.2L EJ22, the DOHC EJ25D 2.5L to 1999, then the SOHC EJ251 and EJ253 2.5L — the EZ30D and EZ36D flat-sixes from 2001 to 2019, the chain-driven FB25B and FB25D 2.5L since 2013, and the FA24F 2.4L turbo in the XT since 2020 and the Wilderness since 2022. The only other turbo was the EJ255 in the 2005–2009 XT.
The table below lists what was offered when. Two generations changed engine partway through — the 2.5L arrived alongside the 2.2L for 1996, available only with the automatic, and the 2.5L changed from EJ to FB for 2013 — so we confirm from the VIN before we quote.

Before You Order
What to check before you order
2.2L or 2.5L — 1995–1999
Every 1995 Outback has the 2.2L EJ22 and every 1997–1999 Outback the DOHC EJ25D 2.5L. In 1996 both were offered and the 2.5L came only with the automatic, so a 1996 manual car has the 2.2L and a 1996 automatic needs its engine code checked.
Which 2.5L
The DOHC EJ25D (1996–1999), the SOHC EJ251 (2000–2004) and EJ253 (2005–2012), the FB25B (2013–2019) and the FB25D (2020 on) are five different non-turbo engines. In the 2010–2014 body the belt-driven EJ253 gave way to the chain-driven FB25B for 2013, so the model year decides.
Which flat-six
The 3.0L EZ30D of 2001–2004 was revised for the 2005–2009 3.0R, and the 3.6L EZ36D replaced it for 2010–2019. Match the year as well as the size.
Turbo engines
The 2005–2009 XT has the EJ255 2.5L turbo. The 2020-on XT and Wilderness have the FA24F 2.4L turbo, which is shared with the Ascent, Legacy XT and 2022-on WRX, so we match the version to the Outback.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and body before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Outback engine problems
Head-gasket failure — DOHC 2.5L, 1996–1999
The EJ25D’s head gaskets fail internally, letting combustion gas into the cooling system, unlike the external seep of the SOHC engines that followed. The signs are overheating on the highway or under load and coolant pushed out of the overflow tank with no visible leak.
Head-gasket leaks — SOHC 2.5L, 2000–2012
The EJ251 and EJ253 leak coolant and oil externally at the head-block seam; left alone, the engine runs low on coolant, overheats and needs replacing. Watch for drips under the engine, a sweet coolant smell and a coolant level that keeps falling.
Oil consumption — FB25, 2013–2014
Early FB25 engines can burn oil past their piston rings. The signs are a low dipstick reading between changes with no visible leak, and the cure is new rings or a new short block.

FAQ
Outback engine questions, answered
Which engine does my Outback have?
From 1995 to 1999: the 2.2L EJ22 in every 1995 car and in 1996 cars without the 2.5L, and the DOHC 2.5L EJ25D as a 1996 automatic-only option and in every 1997–1999 car. Later 2.5L cars: EJ251 2000–2004, EJ253 2005–2012, FB25B 2013–2019 and FB25D from 2020. On the sixes: EZ30D 2001–2009 and EZ36D 2010–2019. Turbos: EJ255 2005–2009 and FA24F from 2020. The code is on a label or stamp on the block, and we confirm from the VIN.
Are the flat-six engines a known problem?
The EZ30D and EZ36D do not share the head-gasket failures of the 2.5L EJ engines of the same years, and both use timing chains rather than a belt.
Will an engine from a Legacy fit my Outback?
The Outback is built on the Legacy and shares most of its engines, so a Legacy engine with the same code from the same model year can be the right one. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
