Which transmission does your Corolla have?
The Corolla was rear-wheel drive through 1983, and the 2-door coupe and 3-door liftback, including the SR5 and GT-S, stayed that way through 1987; every other Corolla since 1984 is front-wheel-drive based, with a transaxle. Apart from the five-speed in the 2009–2010 XRS, its automatics had three or four speeds until 2014, when the CVT arrived: the belt-type K313 on the 1.8L, and the Direct Shift K120, with a mechanical launch gear, on the 2.0L.
The sedan and Hatchback offered a manual through 2022, and the Corolla Hybrid uses an electronically controlled hybrid transaxle instead of a gearbox. The table below shows what was fitted when, and we confirm the unit from your VIN before we quote.

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Front- or rear-wheel drive, 1984–1987
The sedan and 5-door hatchback of these years have a front-wheel-drive transaxle, while the 2-door coupe and 3-door liftback, including the SR5 and GT-S, are rear-wheel drive, with a separate transmission and a driveshaft. The two layouts never share a unit, so tell us which body you have.
Count the gears, then match the code
From 1984 to 2002 an automatic Corolla can have the three-speed A131L or a four-speed, and the two do not swap. Match the gear count first, then the code on the unit’s tag, and we confirm it from the VIN.
All-Trac models, 1988–1992
An All-Trac Corolla is four-wheel drive, and its transaxle has an output to the rear axle that a front-drive unit lacks. A transaxle from a front-drive Corolla is not a substitute.
Automatic, CVT or manual
A 2014–2019 Corolla sedan can have a four-speed automatic (base L, 2014–2016), a CVT or a six-speed manual, and a 2020–2022 sedan can have a K313, a K120 or a manual depending on the engine. Match the engine and trim, not just the year.
K313 is not K120
The 1.8L’s CVT and the 2.0L’s Direct Shift K120 are different units; the K120 has a mechanical launch gear and is also used in the Hatchback and Corolla Cross. They do not swap.
Hybrids have a transaxle, not a gearbox
The Corolla Hybrid uses a P610 hybrid transaxle for 2020–2022 and a different, fifth-generation unit from 2023, each with the motor-generators built in, and the Corolla Cross Hybrid has its own. None of them interchanges with a CVT.
Rule out stalling first
A cracked engine computer on certain 2005–2008 cars and a failing fuel pump on certain 2019 Hatchbacks and 2020 sedans both stall the car in a way that is easy to blame on the transmission. Both are covered by Toyota recalls, so have the VIN checked first.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Corolla transmission problems
Worn synchronizers — T50 five-speed, 1984–1987 SR5 and GT-S
The T50 behind the rear-drive Corollas is a light-duty gearbox, and with high mileage its synchronizers wear until it grinds on quick shifts. By that stage it needs a rebuild or a replacement unit.
Torque-converter failure — 2019 Corolla Hatchback CVT
The torque converter in the CVT of certain 2019 Hatchbacks can fail and leave the car without drive, and Toyota recalled the affected cars to fix it. Manual cars are not affected. Have the VIN checked for an open recall before buying a transmission.

FAQ
Corolla transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Corolla have?
A four- or five-speed manual or a three-speed automatic on 1980–1983 cars. The 1984–1987 SR5 and GT-S are rear-wheel drive, with the T50 manual or, on the SR5, the A42DL automatic. Other Corollas from 1984 to 2013 have a manual, the A131L three-speed or a four-speed automatic such as the A245E or U341E, with the U250E five-speed on the 2009–2010 XRS. From 2014 the 1.8L uses the K313 CVT (the 2014–2016 L kept a four-speed), the 2.0L uses the K120 Direct Shift CVT, a six-speed manual was offered through 2022, and the Corolla Hybrid has a hybrid transaxle: the P610 for 2020–2022 and a fifth-generation unit from 2023. Send us your VIN and we’ll confirm.
My 2019 Corolla Hatchback stalled and will not move. Is it the CVT?
It can be. A Toyota recall covers a torque-converter failure in the CVT of certain 2019 Hatchbacks, so have a Toyota dealer check the VIN before you buy a transmission. Certain 2019 Hatchbacks can also stall from a failing fuel pump, which is covered by a separate recall.
Will a CVT from a Corolla Hatchback fit my sedan?
Only if the engines match. The Hatchback’s K120 goes with the 2.0L, so it belongs with a 2.0L SE or XSE sedan or a non-hybrid sedan from 2023, not a 1.8L car with the K313, and the model year still has to match. Send us your VIN.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
