Transmission Options
Which transmission does your Prius have?
The Prius has no conventional transmission. In place of a gearbox it has a hybrid transaxle — the unit Toyota calls an eCVT, which houses the motor-generators — and an inverter whose power module drives those motors. This page covers both: the P111, P112, P410, P510, P610, PB10 and PB12 transaxles and the inverters that go with them.
The table below shows which transaxle each generation and body uses. The transaxle, inverter and hybrid battery are matched to each other and to the generation, so we confirm from your VIN before we quote.
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| P111 hybrid transaxle |

|---|---|
| P112 hybrid transaxle | With a 201.6 V nickel-metal-hydride battery. |

|---|---|
| P410 hybrid transaxle | Prius 2010–2015, Prius v 2012–2017, Prius Plug-in 2012–2015. |

|---|---|
| P510 hybrid transaxle |
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| P610 hybrid transaxle | Prius 2016–2022, including AWD-e from 2019. Helical gears. |
| P610 hybrid transaxle with one-way clutch | Prius Prime 2017–2022. The clutch lets both motors drive the car in EV mode, so it is not the standard P610. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Transaxle, inverter or battery
A hybrid-system shutdown can come from the transaxle, the inverter or the hybrid battery. Have the fault codes read before ordering so the right part is replaced.
Generation and body
The P410 serves the 2010–2015 Prius, Prius v and Plug-in, but the Prius c of the same years has the P510 and the 2016-on car has the P610. The Prime’s P610 has an extra one-way clutch. Match the body and generation, not just the badge.
Inverter cover may still apply
For the 2010–2015 Prius and 2012–2017 Prius v, Toyota’s Customer Confidence Program covers the inverter power module for 20 years with unlimited mileage. Check with a dealer before buying an inverter.
Not a CVT
Although Toyota calls it an eCVT, the hybrid transaxle is not the belt-type CVT used in the Corolla and other Toyotas, and the two are not alternatives.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transaxle, generation and body before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Prius transmission problems
Inverter power-module failure — 2010–2015 Prius, 2012–2017 Prius v
Overheated transistors in the inverter’s intelligent power module shut the hybrid system down, sometimes without entering fail-safe mode, so the car stalls. Toyota recalled it twice — 14V-053 in February 2014 (a software update, with the inverter repaired or replaced if it had already failed) and 18V-684 in October 2018 for the 2010–2014 Prius and 2012–2014 Prius v — and after a class-action settlement its Customer Confidence Program covers the inverter on these cars for 20 years with unlimited mileage, with a loaner or tow and reimbursement. Check that cover before buying an inverter.
Wiring-harness short at the power control unit — 2016–2018
The engine wiring harness can chafe where it meets the hybrid power control unit, short out and in the worst case start a fire. Recall 18V-579 covers it.
Brake booster pump — 2010–2015
Nitrogen can leak from the brake booster pump into the brake fluid. Recall 13V-235 covers the 2010 Prius, and a class action covered the 2010–2015 Prius and Plug-in and the 2012–2015 Prius v. Not a transaxle fault, but worth checking on any car of these years.

FAQ
Prius transmission questions, answered
Which transaxle does my Prius have?
P111 for 2001–2003, P112 for 2004–2009, P410 for the 2010–2015 Prius, Prius v and Plug-in, P510 for the Prius c, P610 for 2016–2022 (with a one-way clutch in the Prime) and PB10 or PB12 from 2023. Send us your VIN and we’ll confirm.
My Prius shut its hybrid system down and stalled. Is the transaxle gone?
On a 2010–2015 Prius or 2012–2017 Prius v, suspect the inverter first: it is a recalled, well-known failure and Toyota covers it for 20 years under its Customer Confidence Program. Have the dealer read the codes before buying anything.
Does the Prius Prime use the same transaxle as the Prius?
The 2017–2022 Prime uses a P610 with an added one-way clutch for dual-motor EV driving, and the 2023-on Prime uses the PB12 rather than the Prius’s unit. Tell us which you have.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
