Transmission Options
Which transmission does your Sienna have?
Every Sienna has been an automatic: a four-speed in the first generation, a five-speed in the second, six- and then eight-speeds in the third, and since 2021 the P810 hybrid transaxle. The unit follows the engine — the 2011–2012 four-cylinder van has a different six-speed from the V6.
The table below shows what was fitted when. An F on the end of a Toyota code means all-wheel drive, and a 2016 and a 2017 van look alike but have different engines and transmissions, so we confirm from your VIN.
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Four-speed automatic | Code: A540E | 1998–2000. |
| Four-speed automatic | Code: A541E | 2001–2003. |
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Five-speed automatic | Code: U151E / U151F | 3.3L and 3.5L V6; U151F on all-wheel-drive vans. |
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Six-speed automatic | Code: U760E / U760F | 2.7L four-cylinder, 2011–2012; U760F on all-wheel drive. |
| Six-speed automatic | Code: U660E / U660F | 3.5L 2GR-FE, 2011–2016; U660F on all-wheel drive. |
| Eight-speed automatic | Code: UA80E / UA80F | 3.5L 2GR-FKS, 2017–2020; UA80F on all-wheel drive. |
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hybrid transaxle | Code: P810 | Every 2021-on van. All-wheel-drive vans add a rear motor. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Front- or all-wheel drive
Toyota builds separate units for each — U151E and U151F, UA80E and UA80F — and they do not interchange. Tell us which your van has.
Match the engine — 2011–2020
The third-generation van had three transmissions: the U760 six-speed with the 2.7L four-cylinder, the U660 six-speed with the 2GR-FE V6 to 2016, and the UA80 eight-speed with the 2GR-FKS from 2017. A unit from behind the wrong engine is not right for your van.
Watch the 2001 and 2004 changeovers
The first-generation four-speed changed from the A540E to the A541E for 2001, and the five-speed arrived with the 3.3L for 2004. Model year identifies the unit.
Hybrid only from 2021
Every 2021-on Sienna has the P810 hybrid transaxle, with its motor-generators built in. There is no conventional automatic for the fourth-generation van.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine, drivetrain and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Sienna transmission problems
Eight-speed shift quality — 2017–2020
Owners of 2017-on Siennas and Highlanders with the UA80 eight-speed have reported noise, harsh shifts and reduced power, and Toyota issued service bulletins and a customer support program for a small number of 2017–2018 vehicles. It is far less reported on the Sienna than on the Highlander; ask your installer to check Toyota’s bulletins before replacing the unit.
Stalling from the fuel pump — 2017–2020
A failing Denso low-pressure fuel pump stalls the engine, which can feel like the transmission dropping out of gear. Toyota recalled 2017–2020 vans (recalls 20V-012 and 20V-682). Have the recall checked first.
No campaign cover — 2004–2016
No transmission safety recall or Toyota campaign has been issued for the 2004–2010 or 2011–2016 vans, so a worn U151 or U660 that slips or shifts harshly has no cover to fall back on.

FAQ
Sienna transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Sienna have?
It depends on the year and engine: the A540E or A541E four-speed to 2003, the U151 five-speed from 2004 to 2010, the U760 six-speed with the 2011–2012 four-cylinder, the U660 six-speed with the V6 from 2011 to 2016, the UA80 eight-speed from 2017 to 2020 and the P810 hybrid transaxle from 2021. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
Will a six-speed from a 2011–2016 Sienna fit my 2017–2020 van?
No. The 2017–2020 van has the 2GR-FKS engine and the UA80 eight-speed; the U660 six-speed belongs with the earlier 2GR-FE.
Do you supply the hybrid transaxle for the 2021-on Sienna?
Yes. Every 2021-on van uses the P810 transaxle. Tell us whether yours is front- or all-wheel drive, since the all-wheel-drive van adds a rear motor.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
