Transmission Options

Which transmission does your 4Runner have?

From 1984 to 1995 the 4Runner came with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic, and the code depends on the engine and drivetrain: the W56 manual sits behind the fuel-injected four-cylinder, for example, and the R150F manual or A340H automatic behind the four-wheel-drive V6. Later trucks kept the A340 four-speed through 2004 and moved to the A750 five-speed with the V8 in 2003 and the V6 in 2005; every V6 truck kept the A750 until 2024, while the 2010-only 2.7L four-cylinder had a four-speed. An eight-speed arrived with the 2025 truck. The manual was dropped during the third generation, and every 4Runner from 2001 on is an automatic.

The table below shows what was fitted when. An F on the end of a Toyota code means four-wheel drive, but the 1988–1995 four-wheel-drive V6 automatic is coded A340H instead, and in 2003–2004 the V6 and V8 had different units, so we confirm from your VIN.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Two- or four-wheel drive

Toyota builds separate units for each — A340E and A340H or A340F, A750E and A750F — and they do not interchange. Tell us which your truck has.

Match the engine and year

From 1988 to 1995 the four-cylinder and the V6 had different manuals, W56 and R150F. A 2003–2004 V6 has the four-speed while the V8 of the same years has the five-speed, and in 2010 the two-wheel-drive 2.7L had a four-speed while every V6 had the five-speed. Engine and model year together identify the unit.

Four-wheel-drive V6 automatic — 1988–1995

The A340H of these years carries the transfer case inside the transmission. The A340F of 1996–2004 trucks bolts to a separate transfer case, so a later unit will not fit an early truck.

Hybrid — 2025 on

The i-FORCE MAX puts a motor between the 2.4L turbo and the eight-speed. Tell us if your 4Runner is a hybrid so we quote the right unit.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine, drivetrain and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common 4Runner transmission problems

Torque converter shudder — A750 five-speed, 2003–2024

When the converter clutch engages at light throttle on a steady cruise, the truck can shudder as if crossing rumble strips. A fluid change is the first thing to try; if the shudder stays, the converter clutch is worn.

Flashing O/D OFF light — A340, 1996–2004

On the electronically controlled A340E and A340F, a flashing O/D OFF light means the transmission computer has stored a fault, often a shift solenoid or speed sensor. Read the code before condemning the unit; worn clutches show instead as slipping or slow engagement on a high-mileage transmission.

FAQ

4Runner transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my 4Runner have?

It depends on the year, engine and drivetrain: a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic in 1984–1995, the A340 four-speed automatic through 2004, a four-speed on the 2010 2.7L, the A750 five-speed with the V8 from 2003 and with the V6 from 2005 to 2024, and the eight-speed from 2025. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Can I get a manual for my 4Runner?

Only on an older truck. The five-speed manual was offered from 1984 into the third generation, and every 4Runner from 2001 on is an automatic.

Will a later A340F fit my 1988–1995 V6 4Runner?

No. The four-wheel-drive V6 automatic of those years is the A340H, with the transfer case built in, while the A340F of 1996–2004 trucks bolts to a separate transfer case. Send us your VIN and we will match the right unit.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
