Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Camry have?

The Camry has gone from four-speed automatics to an eight-speed, with five- and six-speed units in between, and since the V6 arrived for 1988 the four-cylinder and V6 cars have always used different transmissions. The All-Trac all-wheel-drive Camrys of 1988–1991 had their own transaxles too, and hybrids use an electronically controlled transaxle of their own.

The table below shows what was fitted in each generation. Cars built near a changeover year can have either unit, so the surest way to identify yours is from the VIN.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Four-cylinder or V6

The two have never shared a transmission. A unit from a V6 Camry will not fit a four-cylinder car, or the other way round.

All-Trac models — 1988–1991

The all-wheel-drive All-Trac Camry has its own transaxles, which also drive the rear wheels: the A540H automatic or a five-speed manual. A front-wheel-drive unit will not fit, so tell us if your car is an All-Trac.

Watch the changeover years

The V6 automatic changed from the A540E to the A541E for 1994, along with the engine. Later, the four-cylinder moved from a four-speed to a five-speed for 2005 and to a six-speed for 2010, and the V6 moved to a five-speed for 2004 and a six-speed for 2007. A car built near a changeover can have either unit, so we confirm from your VIN.

Hybrids use their own transaxle

A Camry Hybrid has an electronically controlled transaxle with its motor-generators built in, and each hybrid generation uses a different one: the P311 for 2007–2011, the P314 for 2012–2017 and the P710 for 2018–2024. None interchanges with a conventional automatic.

All-wheel drive — 2020–2024

All-wheel drive became an option on four-cylinder Camrys for 2020. These cars use the UB80F, an all-wheel-drive version of the eight-speed that will not fit a front-wheel-drive car, or the other way round.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Camry transmission problems

Six-speed shudder — 2012–2014 four-cylinder

The six-speed automatic behind the 2.5L can shudder under light throttle at moderate speeds as the torque converter locks up — a feeling like driving over rumble strips. The usual repair is a replacement torque converter.

Harsh, hesitant shifts — 2018 eight-speed

Early eight-speed cars can shift roughly or hesitate, especially at low speed and when pulling away. Have the car checked for transmission software updates before deciding the transmission itself has to be replaced.

FAQ

Camry transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Camry have?

It depends on the model year and engine. Every Camry automatic was a four-speed until the V6 moved to a five-speed for 2004 and the four-cylinder for 2005. Six-speeds followed for 2007 on V6 cars and 2010 on four-cylinder cars, and eight-speeds for 2018. Hybrids use their own transaxle. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Can I use a transmission from a V6 Camry in a four-cylinder?

No. Since the V6 arrived for 1988, four-cylinder and V6 Camrys have used different transmissions in every generation, and they do not interchange.

Was the Camry sold with a manual transmission?

Yes, through the 2011 model year: on four-cylinder cars, and in some earlier generations on the V6 too. From 2012 every US Camry has had an automatic or a hybrid transaxle.

Do you supply Camry Hybrid transaxles?

Yes. Tell us the model year, because each hybrid generation uses a different unit.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.

Ready to replace your Camry transmission?
