Engine Options
Which engine does your Camry have?
Since 1983 the Camry has used six gasoline four-cylinder engines and six V6s, two turbodiesels in the mid-1980s, and hybrid engines since 2007. The badge on the trunk tells you very little: a 2009 and a 2010 Camry belong to the same generation but have different four-cylinder engines, and a 1993 and a 1994 V6 have different 3.0L engines.
The table below sets out every Camry engine by generation. A Camry Hybrid engine is not interchangeable with the gasoline engine of the same size, so tell us if your Camry is a hybrid.

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Find your engine code
Every Camry engine carries a Toyota code — 5S-FE, 2AR-FE or A25A-FKS, for example — and the code, not the model year, decides which engine fits. Your VIN tells us the code if you can’t read it on the block.
Hybrid or gasoline
Hybrid engines (2AZ-FXE, 2AR-FXE and A25A-FXS) have different internals from the gasoline engines they resemble and are not a swap for them.
Watch the 2010 changeover
The four-cylinder changed from the 2.4L 2AZ-FE to the 2.5L 2AR-FE for the 2010 model year, partway through the XV40 generation, so the generation alone does not tell you which engine a car has.
Which V6
The 1992–1996 cars used two different 3.0L V6s: the 3VZ-FE through 1993 and the 1MZ-FE from 1994. From 2004 to 2006 two V6s were sold side by side: the 3.0L on LE and XLE models and the 3.3L on the SE. From 2018 the 3.5L is the 2GR-FKS, a different engine from the earlier 2GR-FE.
Have your VIN ready
Send the VIN with your request. It pins down the model year, the engine code and whether the car is a hybrid, so the engine we quote is the one your Camry needs.
Common Problems
Common Camry engine problems
Oil consumption — 2007–2009 2.4L
The 2AZ-FE in these years can burn oil heavily between changes. Toyota replaced pistons and rings under a warranty enhancement that has now expired.
Stripped head-bolt threads — 2002–2006 2.4L
The cylinder-head bolt threads in the aluminum block can pull out, letting the head gasket leak coolant at the back of the engine and causing overheating.
Oil sludge — 1997–2002
The 2.2L four-cylinder (1997–2001) and the 3.0L V6 (1997–2002) are prone to oil thickening into sludge, especially when oil changes have been stretched. Sludge blocks the oil passages and starves the engine of lubrication.
Oil hose leak — 3.5L V6 2GR-FE
Early 2GR-FE engines have an oil supply hose for the variable valve timing with a rubber section that can degrade and leak. Toyota replaced the hose under a service campaign, so check whether that was done on the engine you buy.

FAQ
Camry engine questions, answered
Will a Camry engine from a different year fit my car?
Only if it is the same engine. The 2.4L 2AZ-FE (2002–2009), the 2.5L 2AR-FE (2010–2017) and the 2018-on A25A-FKS are three different engines, and engines of the same size can still differ: the 2.0L of 1983–1986 and the 2.0L of 1987–1991 are not the same engine. Match the engine code first, then the year range, and send us your VIN so we can check the match.
Can I fit a gasoline engine in a Camry Hybrid?
No. A Camry Hybrid engine runs as part of the hybrid system, with its own transaxle and control electronics, so the gasoline 2AZ-FE, 2AR-FE or A25A-FKS cannot take its place. Order the hybrid engine your car left the factory with.
Do you supply engines for the Camry Solara?
Yes. The Solara coupe shares its engines with the Camry family — the 2.2L, 2.4L, 3.0L V6 or 3.3L V6, depending on the year. Choose Solara in the quote form, or call us.
Is the 2025 Camry available with a V6?
No. From the 2025 model year every Camry is a hybrid with the 2.5L A25A-FXS engine.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
