Engine Options
Which engine does your RAV4 have?
Apart from the 3.5L 2GR-FE V6 offered for 2006–2012, the RAV4 has used four-cylinders since 1996: the 2.0L 3S-FE to 2000, then the 2.0L 1AZ-FE, the 2.4L 2AZ-FE, the 2.5L 2AR-FE and the 2.5L A25A-FKS, with a hybrid version of the 2.5L since 2016. From 2026 the RAV4 is hybrid or plug-in hybrid only.
The table below lists what was offered when. The same model year can have a four-cylinder, a V6 or a hybrid, and the hybrid engines do not interchange with the gasoline ones, so we confirm from your VIN before we quote.
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L four-cylinder | Code: 3S-FE | All US models. Timing belt; every later RAV4 engine has a chain. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L four-cylinder | Code: 1AZ-FE | 2001–2003. |
| 2.4L four-cylinder | Code: 2AZ-FE | 2004–2005. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4L four-cylinder | Code: 2AZ-FE | 2006–2008. |
| 2.5L four-cylinder | Code: 2AR-FE | 2009–2012. |
| 3.5L V6 | Code: 2GR-FE | 2006–2012. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5L four-cylinder | Code: 2AR-FE | All gasoline models; the US had no 2.0L or V6. |
| 2.5L hybrid | Code: 2AR-FXE | RAV4 Hybrid, 2016–2018, with a rear electric motor for all-wheel drive. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5L four-cylinder | Code: A25A-FKS | |
| 2.5L hybrid | Code: A25A-FXS | RAV4 Hybrid. |
| 2.5L plug-in hybrid | Code: A25A-FXS | RAV4 Prime, 2021–2024, renamed RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid for 2025. Same engine code as the Hybrid, but a higher-output hybrid system and a much larger lithium-ion battery. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5L hybrid | Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid only; no gasoline-only RAV4. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Which 2.0L, 1996–2003
The 3S-FE (1996–2000) and the 1AZ-FE (2001–2003) are both 2.0L four-cylinders, but they come from different engine families and do not interchange. The 3S-FE also drives its camshafts with a belt, so fit a new timing belt with it unless there is a record of one.
Which 2.5L
The 2AR-FE (2009–2018) and the A25A-FKS (2019–2025) are both 2.5L four-cylinders, but from different engine families. They are not the same engine, so the model year decides.
Hybrid or not
The 2AR-FXE and A25A-FXS are hybrid engines built for the hybrid system; they are not the 2AR-FE or A25A-FKS. A RAV4 Prime uses the A25A-FXS too, but with its own hybrid system. Tell us if your RAV4 is a Hybrid, Prime or Plug-in Hybrid.
Four-cylinder or V6, 2006–2012
The XA30 came with a 2.4L, a 2.5L or the 3.5L V6, and the V6 has its own five-speed transmission. Check which you have before ordering.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and drive type before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common RAV4 engine problems
Oil consumption — 2AZ-FE, 2006–2008
The 2.4L’s piston-ring design lets the oil-ring drain holes clog with carbon, so the engine burns oil and can run low enough to fail. Toyota’s warranty enhancement for these RAV4s has ended, so check the oil use of any 2AZ-FE before relying on it.
Porous engine block — early A25A
A casting flaw in some early A25A blocks lets coolant leak, which can overheat the engine, or lets oil leak with a fire risk. Toyota recalled affected early XA50 RAV4s and RAV4 Hybrids to inspect the engine and replace it where needed, so ask for the donor vehicle’s VIN and check it for an open recall before buying an early A25A.
VVT-i oil line — 2GR-FE V6
The rubber section of the V6’s VVT-i oil supply hose can split and dump the engine’s oil suddenly, which can ruin the engine within moments. Toyota’s fix is an all-metal replacement line, so check that it is fitted on any engine you buy.

FAQ
RAV4 engine questions, answered
Which engine does my RAV4 have?
A 2.0L 3S-FE for 1996–2000, a 2.0L 1AZ-FE for 2001–2003, a 2.4L 2AZ-FE for 2004–2008, a 2.5L 2AR-FE for 2009–2018 and a 2.5L A25A-FKS for 2019–2025, with the 3.5L V6 offered for 2006–2012. Hybrids use the 2AR-FXE (2016–2018) or the A25A-FXS (2019–2025), and every 2026 RAV4 is a hybrid or plug-in hybrid. Send us your VIN and we’ll confirm.
Is the 2.4L oil consumption still covered by Toyota?
No. Toyota’s warranty enhancement for oil consumption on 2006–2008 RAV4s has ended, so new pistons and rings, or a replacement engine, are now at the owner’s cost.
Is the RAV4 Prime engine the same as the RAV4 Hybrid’s?
Both are the A25A-FXS, but the Prime has a higher-output hybrid system and an 18.1 kWh lithium-ion battery against the Hybrid’s much smaller pack. Tell us which you have and send the VIN.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
