Engine Options
Which engine does your Tundra have?
The Tundra has used six engines across three generations: the 3.4L V6 and 4.7L V8 of the first truck (2000–2006), joined by a 4.0L V6 for 2005; the 4.0L V6 and the 4.7L, 4.6L and 5.7L V8s of the second (2007–2021); and, since 2022, a 3.4L twin-turbo V6 on its own or as the i-FORCE MAX hybrid. There has been no V8 since 2021.
The table below lists what was offered when. The 4.7L changed for 2005 and the 4.0L for 2011 without the truck looking any different, so we confirm the engine from your VIN.
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3.4L V6 | Code: 5VZ-FE | 2000–2004. Base engine; timing belt. |
| 4.7L V8 | Code: 2UZ-FE | 2000–2004 without VVT-i; 2005–2006 with VVT-i, a plastic intake and electronic throttle. The two versions do not interchange. |
| 4.0L V6 | Code: 1GR-FE | 2005–2006. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 4.0L V6 | Code: 1GR-FE | 2007–2014; Dual VVT-i version from 2011. Dropped for 2015. |
| 4.7L V8 | Code: 2UZ-FE | 2007–2009, with VVT-i. |
| 4.6L V8 | Code: 1UR-FE | 2010–2019. |
| 5.7L V8 | Code: 3UR-FE | All years. |
| 5.7L flex-fuel V8 | Code: 3UR-FBE | E85-capable option in some regions from 2009. Different fuel system and calibration from the 3UR-FE. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3.4L twin-turbo V6 | Code: V35A-FTS | i-FORCE. Every non-hybrid truck; output varies by grade. |
| 3.4L twin-turbo hybrid (i-FORCE MAX) | Code: V35A-FTS | Same engine with a motor-generator between the engine and transmission. Standard on TRD Pro and Capstone, optional on Limited and above. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Which 4.7L
The 4.7L gained VVT-i, a plastic intake and an electronic throttle for 2005. A 2005-on engine, intake and computer are not a drop-in for a 2000–2004 truck, so we match the year as well as the 2UZ-FE code.
Which 4.0L
The 4.0L had single VVT-i from 2005 to 2010 and Dual VVT-i from 2011 to 2014. Both carry the code 1GR-FE, so we match by model year rather than the code alone.
Flex-fuel 5.7L
Some 2009-on trucks have the E85-capable 3UR-FBE rather than the 3UR-FE. They differ in fuel system and calibration, and the engine code in your VIN tells us which you have.
Hybrid — 2022 on
The i-FORCE MAX uses the same V35A-FTS as the non-hybrid truck, with a motor-generator between the engine and transmission and a battery. Tell us if your Tundra is a hybrid.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the engine code, model year and whether the truck is a hybrid before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Tundra engine problems
Main-bearing failure — 3.4L twin-turbo, 2022–2024
Machining debris left in the block can wipe the number-one main bearing, and the owner hears a knock or the truck stalls or will not start. Toyota’s fix is a new engine: recall 24V-381 replaced engines outright, recall 25V-767 has dealers inspect the bearing and replace the engine if it cannot be cleared, and recall 26V-320 covers 2024 trucks with an inspection while the final remedy is settled. Check for open recalls by VIN before ordering an engine.
Air-injection failure — 4.7L and 5.7L, 2007–2010
Moisture gets into the secondary air-injection pumps and switching valves, which fail, light the check-engine lamp and put the truck in limp mode. The engine itself is not at fault. Toyota extended the warranty on the system to 10 years or 150,000 miles on 2007–2010 trucks and covered 2011 models under warranty enhancement ZG6.
Camshaft failures — 5.7L, 2007
Toyota reported 20 camshaft failures on early 2007 5.7L engines in May 2007 and attributed them to a casting flaw. A small number of early trucks were affected.
Fuel-pump stalling — 2018–2020
A failing Denso low-pressure fuel pump can stall the engine. Toyota recalled trucks from around 2018 to 2020 (recalls 20V-012 and 20V-682), so have the recall checked before suspecting the engine.

FAQ
Tundra engine questions, answered
Will a 4.7L from a 2005 or later truck fit my 2000–2004 Tundra?
Not as a drop-in. The 2005-on engine has VVT-i, a plastic intake and an electronic throttle and needs its own computer. Match the year range as well as the 2UZ-FE code, and send us your VIN so we can confirm.
My 2022–2024 Tundra is knocking. Is that the engine recall?
Very likely. The 3.4L twin-turbo has been recalled three times (24V-381, 25V-767 and 26V-320) for main-bearing damage from machining debris, and the remedy is a replacement engine from Toyota. Have a dealer check your VIN before you order one from us.
Is an early Tundra worth a replacement engine?
Check the frame first. 2000–2003 trucks were recalled for rear cross-member corrosion in eastern and Mid-Atlantic states (recall 09V-444), and 2007–2008 trucks were covered by the 2016 frame-rust settlement with a 12-year inspection. A sound frame makes the engine worth doing.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
