Engine Options

Which engine does your Tacoma have?

Every Tacoma generation has had a four-cylinder and a V6, and they have all been different engines — four four-cylinders and three V6s in thirty years — until a turbocharged four-cylinder and a hybrid replaced both for 2024.

The table below lists what was offered in each generation. Toyota stamps the engine code on the block, and we can confirm it from your VIN.

1995–2004First generation
2.4L four-cylinderCode: 2RZ-FETwo-wheel-drive trucks only.
2.7L four-cylinderCode: 3RZ-FEStandard on 4WD; also on 2WD and PreRunner trucks.
3.4L V6Code: 5VZ-FEOptional on most trucks.
2005–2015Second generation
2.7L four-cylinderCode: 2TR-FE
4.0L V6Code: 1GR-FE
2016–2023Third generation
2.7L four-cylinderCode: 2TR-FEUpdated version. 2023 was its last year.
3.5L V6Code: 2GR-FKSPort and direct injection.
2024–presentFourth generation
2.4L turbocharged four-cylinderCode: T24A-FTSThree outputs depending on grade and transmission.
2.4L turbo hybrid (i-FORCE MAX)Code: T24A-FTSSame engine with a motor built into the eight-speed transmission. TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, TRD Pro and Trailhunter.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Find your engine code

Toyota identifies each engine with a code such as 2TR-FE or 1GR-FE, stamped on the engine. If you can’t find it, we can confirm it from your VIN.

Which four-cylinder

On 1995–2004 trucks the 2.4L was two-wheel drive only, while the 2.7L was the standard engine on four-wheel drive. They are different engines.

Hybrid or not — 2024 on

The i-FORCE MAX uses the same 2.4L turbo with a motor in the transmission. Tell us which you have, and the grade.

Check the frame first — 1995–2010

Toyota ran frame-rust programs on 1995–2010 Tacomas, including buy-backs and frame replacements. Before paying for an engine, make sure the frame is sound or has been replaced.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and drivetrain before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Tacoma engine problems

Head gasket — 2005–2015 4.0L

Head-gasket failure, usually at the rear cylinder, is widely reported on the 1GR-FE: coolant loss, a cold misfire, white smoke and milky oil.

Crank sensor stall — 2016–2017 V6

The crankshaft position sensor can fail and stall the engine. Toyota recalled these trucks in 2017; check by VIN that the work was done before blaming the engine.

Oil and coolant leaks — 2.7L

Early 2005–2007 engines leaked oil from the front crankshaft seal, the plastic coolant bypass tube can crack, and high-mileage engines can use oil.

Fuel pump recall — 2018–2019

A failing fuel pump can stall the engine on these trucks. Toyota recalled them in 2020, so a stall is not necessarily an engine fault.

FAQ

Tacoma engine questions, answered

Will a Tacoma engine from another generation fit?

No. Each generation has its own four-cylinder and V6, and none of them carries over. Match the engine code first; send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Does the 3.4L V6 have a head-gasket problem?

Some owners report it, but Toyota’s well-known head-gasket program was for the earlier 3.0L V6, which was never fitted to a Tacoma. There was no Toyota campaign for the 3.4L.

Can I use a 4.0L from a 4Runner or FJ Cruiser?

They use the same 1GR-FE family, but each vehicle has its own version. Match the engine code and model years, and send us your VIN so we can confirm.

Did Toyota drop the V6?

Yes. From 2024 every Tacoma uses the 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder, on its own or as the i-FORCE MAX hybrid.

Is the engine covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
