Engine Options

Which engine does your Sienna have?

The Sienna has had four generations and six engines: the 3.0L V6 of the first van (1998–2003), the 3.3L and then the 3.5L V6 of the second (2004–2010), a 2.7L four-cylinder and two versions of the 3.5L V6 in the third (2011–2020), and the 2.5L hybrid that is the only engine in the fourth (2021 on).

The table below lists what was offered when. The 3.5L changed from the 2GR-FE to the 2GR-FKS for 2017 in a van that looks the same, so we confirm the engine from your VIN.

1998–2003First generation (XL10)
3.0L V6Code: 1MZ-FE1998–2000 without VVT-i; 2001–2003 with VVT-i. The heads and intakes differ, so the two do not interchange.
2004–2010Second generation (XL20)
3.3L V6Code: 3MZ-FE2004–2006; timing belt.
3.5L V6Code: 2GR-FE2007–2010; timing chain.
2011–2020Third generation (XL30)
2.7L four-cylinderCode: 1AR-FE2011–2012 only.
3.5L V6Code: 2GR-FE2011–2016.
3.5L V6Code: 2GR-FKS2017–2020, port and direct injection. Not interchangeable with the 2GR-FE.
2021–presentFourth generation (XL40)
2.5L hybridCode: A25A-FXSEvery 2021-on Sienna is a hybrid. All-wheel-drive vans add a rear motor.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Which 3.5L

The 2GR-FE (2007–2016) and the 2GR-FKS (2017–2020) are both 3.5L V6s, but the FKS has port and direct injection, different heads and its own computer. They are not interchangeable.

Which 3.0L

The 3.0L gained VVT-i for 2001, and its heads and intake differ from the 1998–2000 engine. Match the year range as well as the 1MZ-FE code.

Hybrid only from 2021

Every 2021-on Sienna is a hybrid with the 2.5L A25A-FXS, which works with the hybrid transaxle and electronics. All-wheel-drive vans add a rear motor, not a different engine.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the engine code, model year and whether the van is a hybrid before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Sienna engine problems

Oil sludge — 3.0L V6, 1998–2002

The first-generation 3.0L is known for oil sludging, which shows as blue smoke, high oil use and eventually engine failure. Toyota settled a class action over it.

VVT-i oil line — 3.5L V6, 2007–2010

A rubber section of the oil line feeding the variable valve timing can split and empty the sump in minutes, which is a common cause of seized 2GR-FE engines. Toyota replaced the hose under service campaign 90K on vans built from December 2006 to June 2009; that cover ended on December 31, 2021.

Fuel-pump recall — 2017–2020

A failing Denso low-pressure fuel pump can stall the engine. Toyota recalled 2017–2020 vans for it (recalls 20V-012 and 20V-682), so have the recall checked before suspecting the engine.

FAQ

Sienna engine questions, answered

Will a 3.5L from a 2011–2016 Sienna fit my 2017–2020 van?

No. The 2017–2020 van has the 2GR-FKS, with port and direct injection, different heads and its own computer. The earlier 2GR-FE is not a swap for it, nor the other way round.

My 2007–2010 Sienna lost all its oil at once. What happened?

Almost certainly the VVT-i oil line, which can split and empty the sump in minutes. An engine that ran dry has usually seized and needs replacing. Toyota replaced the hose under campaign 90K until the end of 2021, so check whether yours was done.

Can I put a gasoline engine in a 2021-on Sienna?

No. There is no gasoline version of the fourth-generation van; every one is a hybrid with the 2.5L A25A-FXS, which works with the hybrid transaxle and electronics. Replace it with the same hybrid engine.

Is the engine covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
